6 Affordable Spring Break Alternatives

It’s almost time for spring break, which means that a number of lucky college students will soon be jetting off to warmer places to escape the cold. For those of us who won't be traveling due to cost, here are some affordable alternatives to those tropical island vacations.

1. Read

Maybe the last thing you want to do during spring break is read. You might have pulled several all-nighters since the semester began and never want to look at anything similar to a textbook again. I get it. But maybe you’re the type of person who cherishes those brief moments in your life when you actually have time to read. You may even have a "Books to Read" list that you've added to over the years. If you don’t, make one! We all have a few books that we’ve always wanted to read but have never had time to. If you’re really ambitious, start a series. You may even finish it before classes start again.

2. Find a new workout

Looking to get in shape before summer starts? Experiment with different workouts over break and find one that you like. If you choose a workout that you love, you’ll actually look forward to doing it. And you'll stick with it.

3. Spend a day in the city

Take the train into the city with some friends. Plan an entire day of shopping, then eat at that expensive restaurant that you love. Order an unnecessary amount of appetizers and, yes, get dessert. Who cares about a diet? It’s spring break.

4. Go to a museum

While you’re in the city, take a trip to the MoMA or MFA. Even if you’re not really into museums, you’ll find a few exhibits that spark your interest. It’s also a good way to spend time with friends and family.

5. Have a dinner party

Maybe you're terrible at cooking. If you're like me, the only substantial meal that you've ever made is Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. Even if you’re not that confident in your cooking skills, try making dinner with your friends one night. It’ll be a learning experience for everyone. And it'll be pretty amusing.

6. Binge-watch shows on Netflix

You’ll probably do this anyway, but hopefully as a last resort.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
