Stevie Nicks is considered to be “The Reigning Queen of Rock and Roll.” Her style of music has created trends that are visible even to this day. Stevie redesigned the overall expectations of a female rock and roll musician, and females in general. Throughout the decades between the 1970s and the 1980s, she transcended gender boundaries, by proving herself in a male-dominated career scene. In this time period, especially in the music scene, female musicians had trouble proving themselves, when most males are the lead singer in rock & roll bands. Stevie broke down barriers and became an inspiration for all of society. She, alongside her band Fleetwood Mac, has sold millions upon millions of records to this day. Here are some reasons you should stop what you're doing and listen to Stevie Nicks:
1. She is a fashion icon
From her infamous shawls to her long golden blonde locks, Stevie Nicks began a trend that is notable to this day. Her bohemian, graceful style has even included her legendary black top hats. If you want to dress like Stevie stop by your local Free People or Anthropology to really embrace her free- spirited style.
2. Her lyrics are inspirational.
"Time's cast a spell on you, & you won't forget me, I know I could of loved you but you would not let me"
3. She was featured on American Horror Story.
Coven was by far the best season of that show. There were some speculations and rumors throughout her life that she practiced and believed in witchcraft, which she denies. Her long, flowy black dresses, high black boots and witch references in her lyrics created assumptions of possible involvement with sorcery and magic. Who cares, even if she was a witch, Stevie still slays. She plays a beautiful rendition of "Rhiannon" on the piano in this particular episode.
4. Her symbolic Twirls during concerts.
If you are unfamiliar with Fleetwood Mac or Stevie, but you watched American Horror Story: Coven, you were introduced to the legendary Stevie Nicks twirl. Not only is this spin iconic, but it appears in almost every one of her concerts and music videos, a crowd favorite to say the least. Her beauty and elegance are exemplified during this move. Combined with her shawl and flowy outfits, this twirl highlights her style and grace.
" I do this thing at the end when the music’s going duh-duh-duh-duh-duh … to me it’s like the horses are running through the forest and the goddesses and gods are all there. It’s a really dramatic part, and when I perform ‘Rhiannon’ myself onstage, I always twirl to it and I love it…When you twirl, you want to look beautiful, you know? You want to have your hands up, and you definitely want to spot or you will get dizzy.” - Stevie Nicks
5. She had the worst breakup in history, but she is still killing the game
Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham had a horrendous breakup in the middle of creating their Grammy-winning album Rumours. The cocaine ridden love affair between the two was destined for turmoil and passionate as can be. You think seeing your ex-boyfriend in the halls every now and then is bad, Stevie had to work with Lindsey every single day until the album was fully complete. Their destructive and dysfunctional relationship has created some of the most amazing music I have ever heard.
I’ll follow you down till the sound of my voice will haunt you.
Fleetwood Mac would not be the band it is to this day, without Stevie Nicks. Her beauty, her grace, and her passion for creating music are an inspiration to us all. Her free-spirit has captivated audiences, and created a coven of "gold dust women". Take a drive, roll your windows down, and blast "Rhiannon" as loud as you can & I promise you will enjoy every bit of it.
Rock on, Stevie xo
