If you listen to today’s Country music, you should immediately recognize the melodious sound of Maren Morris’ voice as it plays through the radio waves. Originating in Texas, Morris puts her own classic country spin on a ‘90s-grown pop influence.
- Her Music Any musical artist will tell you they want to be liked for their music above all else, so obviously this Maren Morris’ strongest selling point. One of the many reviews on Morris is that she is honest, and honest she is. By writing her own songs, it becomes very plain that Morris sings only the truth. Her raspy tone coupled with her witty lyrics, Morris is set apart from other country artists of the day who have conformed to the pop-crossover/mainstream sound filling the radio stations; she brought classic country back into the modern country era.
- Her Voice Morris is a small girl with a big voice. In her debut single, “My Church,” Morris is belting out the chorus with little effort; it just comes natural. Morris has many facets to her voice, as well. As found in her song “Rich,” she has proved that she doesn’t just belt out notes, but has a talent in a quick, fast-paced rhythm. She can also slow it down as is apparent in her song “Once.”
- Songwriting As has already been mentioned, Morris is not just a singer, but a songwriter as well. She came to Nashville in her early 20’s to begin songwriting, and has written songs for artists as big as Tim McGraw (“Last Turn Home”, Sundown Heaventown) and as popular as the hit television series, Nashville (“Caged Bird”, The Music of Nashville: Season 4, Volume 2). Her lyrics are full of wit, heart, and heartbreak (ex: “Say what you want about me/ Your words are gasoline on my fire”).
- Her Class On every moment of this ride Morris has allowed us on, she has remained gracious and humble. When fame hits someone at a fast pace, it is easy to get wrapped up in the celebrity. But that’s the thing about country music: these artists don’t. Morris has continually talked about her process of getting to where she is now, from her home in Texas to songwriting in Nashville for years before she found her own voice blasting through the speakers. She never assumes entitlement.
- Her Relatability Morris is just a 25-year-old Harry Potter nerd like so many of the rest of us. She drinks craft beers and sings at the top of her lungs in the car. Her go-to karaoke song is “Wannabe” by The Spice Girls and just like any other aspiring country artist, Morris found herself performing at small honkytonk bars to get her music out there. Her lyrics are not all the same and she has created a style all of her own. Morris is not afraid to break down barriers and speak the truth, and that’s what makes her so real to her fanbase.
“I love Maren Morris’ music because it’s so real & her songs are very applicable to my life.” –Julia C., University of Tennessee at Chattanooga
“The sound of her music is just so different to me; I can’t think of anyone else’s music that sounds like hers.” Kristen D., avid Taylor Swift fan
“The fact that she writes a sarcastic country song really speaks to me.” –Casey N., Loves good beer and great country music
Don't take my word or this article's for it, though. Go listen to Maren Morris' debut album "Hero" and decide for youself just how lucky country music is to have this budding talent.
