I recently came across this humorous list of Amazing Quotes, and it truly is amazing (and chilling). But, as I went through the list, I discovered something. All of the quotes are by men. Literally all of them. I checked like three times. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but I know there’s some dang fabulous women who have said some pretty note-worthy things in their time, so I wanted to follow that up by compiling some of the most fabulous quotes said by women, ever. And it’s just the right mix of words for when you feel like you can’t do what you want to.

1. “You are the one that possesses the keys to your being. You carry the passport to your own happiness.” - Diane von Furstenberg

2. “Power’s not given to you. You have to take it.” - Beyoncé Knowles Carter

3. “I hope the fathers and mothers of little girls will look at them and say ‘yes, women can.’” - Dilma Rousseff

4. A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle. –Irina Dunn

5. “One of the secrets to staying young is to always do things you don’t know how to do, to keep learning.” - Ruth Reichl

6. “A strong woman is a woman determined to do something others are determined not be done.” - Marge Piercy

7. “In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.” - Coco Chanel

8. “The question isn’t who is going to let me; it’s who is going to stop me.” - Ayn Rand

9. “A surplus of effort could overcome a deficit of confidence.” - Sonia Sotomayor

10. Without leaps of imagination, or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning. — Gloria Steinem

11. “I learned a long time ago that there is something worse than missing the goal, and that’s not pulling the trigger.” - Mia Hamm

12. “When I’m hungry, I eat. When I’m thirsty, I drink. When I feel like saying something, I say it.” - Madonna

13. “Everyone shines, given the right lighting.” - Susan Cain

14. “If you just set out to be liked, you would be prepared to compromise on anything at any time, and you would achieve nothing.” - Margaret Thatcher

15. “We do not need magic to change the world, we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already: we have the power to imagine better.” - J.K. Rowling

16. Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people. — Eleanor Roosevelt

17. Stop wearing your wishbone where your backbone ought to be. — Elizabeth Gilbert

18. I know for sure that what we dwell on is what we become. — Oprah Winfrey

19. I think self-awareness is probably the most important thing toward being a champion. — Billie Jean King

20. “When I’m tired, I rest. I say, ‘I can’t be a superwoman today.’” - Jada Pinkett Smith

I think these influential women, some well-known, and some not, all hit the nail on the head. They understand that sometimes you’re going to have days where you mess everything up and feels as if your life is in shambles. But they also understand that you can’t stay there. You have to get up, defy all odds, and continue with life, even when you don’t feel like it.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
