45 Ways Greek Life Taught Me To Be A Badass

This week I asked ladies in sororities and men in fraternities what being in Greek life has taught them. The responses ranged from funny to serious and everywhere in between.  

1. Dressing well and looking your best matters.
2. Crying in front of people is okay.
3. It is possible to have over 100 good friends, if you put effort into it.
4. Philanthropy matters, and really does help the needy.
5. How to be a gentleman.
6. How to be a classy lady.
7. How to work together to achieve a common goal for the greater good.
8. Arguing is okay, if it serves a purpose.
9. How to network.
10. How to drink at a socially acceptable level.
11. Grades are important, for not only your career, but it shows self worth and how you view yourself.
12. Everything pastel is better.
13. How to tie a bow-tie.
14. Discovering great brands like Vineyard Vines, Southern Tide, and Lily Pulitzer.
15. Being a part of something bigger than yourself is amazing.
16. The lyrics to "Wagon Wheel."
17. Comfort colors.
18. Frockets are a must.
19. Goodwill is a great party clothes resource.
20. How to paint a cooler.
21. Save dimes, for dime wars.
22. How to ask the opposite sex to events.
23. Proper date etiquette.
24. Time management.
25. Communication skills, and being able to talk to complete strangers and being able to find commonalities with them, AKA rush.
26. Seeing how far of an impact a passionate organized group can have.
27. The importance of delegation of responsibilities within a large organization, and complete trust in others with delegated responsibilities that impact your own life.
28. Realizing how good it feels to give back to the community, and helping other organizations contribute to their philanthropies.
30. Being reliable for your brothers and sisters.
31. With the right group of people, you can make the most wild visions become a reality.
32. The true meaning of brotherhood and sisterhood.
33. You can have a family even if it's not blood related. I love my little and my big and would do anything for them.
34. How to monogram everything.
35. How to take care of your friends at their worst moments.
36. Public speaking skills.
37. Gained more confidence and better self-esteem.
38. The Greek alphabet.
39. Rituals and traditions serve a purpose, and are meant to teach rather than be viewed as just something that we have to do
40. Learned to love country music.
41. Never wear cargo shorts or pants.
42. That paying for friends is the biggest myth about Greek life, and everyone should join a Greek organization because it's a once in a lifetime opportunity that only presents itself while at college.
43. Figured out my favorite weather is day-drinking weather.
44. That animal house no way reflects what a real fraternity experience is.

The last response was by far my favorite one.

45. Fratting is a lifestyle.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
