Snapchat Is Overrated For The Wrong Reasons, And I'm SO Over It

Out of all the different social media I use daily if I could delete one for good and never look back, it would be Snapchat. I haven't deleted it because in some ways it is useful in that I can connect with people easily. Everyone asks for your Snap nowadays instead of your number. That being said, I don't use it often and when I do I generally use it with a purpose.

It's so impersonal

I hate that you can't have a legitimate conversation on Snapchat. Everyone just sends photos of their faces to keep their "streaks" but why? Why are we taking time out of our day to send a meaningless photo and not taking the time to actually communicate with our friends? Like all of that time dedicated to replying to streaks daily just to get a little fire emoji next to their name. It's a marketing ploy to get us to use the app every day. I want to have real conversations with people and get to know them rather than just seeing a picture of their face daily.

I couldn't tell you who half the people on my Snap list are

I honestly don't even bother looking at stories anymore just because I have no idea who half the people are. Most are people I've met at parties and I spoke to once and now their stories show up forever on my list. I probably look at like five people's stories and I don't even do it regularly.

It's just a way to show others how much "fun" you're having

Sometimes stories are funny and they make people laugh. But other times they're just a way for people to show others how much fun they're having- but who knows if they're actually having fun, anyway?

I want someone to ask for my number, not my Snap

When a guy asks for my number instead of my Snapchat I am legitimately taken aback. I absolutely love being able to have text conversations. I think it makes getting to know someone easier. Plus, you don't have to save every single message in case you want to come back and reread it for your response. People who get offended when you save their messages are also super sketchy. Like- why are you sending me this message if you are afraid of it being saved? Not the kind of person I want to be talking with.

It's become a cliché that our generation is on our phones too much. I haven't been using snap as often as I used to and I mostly use it to talk to people who I don't see on a daily basis. I just don't understand the hype. I want to fully communicate and get to know others, not just see a photo of their face a few times every day.
