She began her musical career at a teen pop star in her home of Canada. Remember "Jagged Little Pill," though? The break-up album of all break-up albums. Alanis Morissette was an inspiration to all people going through hard times, needing to know the words to describe their own feelings in life, and speaking to the souls of the '90s.
Last week, while listening to iHeart radio's 90's station, I overheard two coworkers asking each other whatever happened to Alanis. I told them where she is now but I started to be more curious about where she has been, too. While listening to Spotify Landmark Edition of "Jagged Little Pill," I learned five things about her that I didn't know before.
1. She had three albums out before "Jagged Little Pill."
When she was 11, she started a record label and began recording under it with one of her friends. She stated that unlike nowadays, record producers were not keen on the idea of signing talent under 18 or even under 25. She was dropped from her old record label when she was 19, and then took that opportunity to move to Hollywood. She had to flock there to be able to write the songs she wanted that were filled with more emotion and passion.
2. When she was 19, she was held at gunpoint.
During the switch between living in Hollywood, California and living in Toronto, Canada, she was traveling back and forth between the two places frequently. At one point the police held her up at gunpoint saying "This is our welcome wagon for you!". Not even that could deter her from spending time in a place that would help her grow as an artist.
3. She wrote "Jagged Little Pill" during OJ Simpson's Trial.
Glen Ballard, who co-wrote and produced "Jagged Little Pill" with Alanis, only got together 20 times and they wrote one song each time. In 1994, five days a week, they completely put together her most successful album. She reports that they would go to lunch each day and have conversations about philosophy. They would talk about: God, life, relationships, culture, war, everything...
4. She was wearing sweatpants when she got "Jagged Little Pill" signed!
She was turned down several times by different record producers. The songs weren't what they were looking for at the time. In January of 1995, she got a call from Maverick that they wanted to meet with her. She was wearing sweatpants and looking' dirty that day, but they told her that it was her only shot. Like the true powerful woman she is, she showed up anyway and played three songs until they were doing the equivalent of backflips across the desk.
5. "You Ought to Know" is based on a journal entry.
This was the only song on the album that she didn't write in the studio, but she came with it already written. It was taken from one of her journal entries during a really hard time for her, but the anger in the song was able to give her power instead of feeling broken. She says that it's not a revenge song, though. She explains "I was writing it so that I didn't get sick, I was writing it to get it out of my body. The same way that I would speak to a therapist or my best friend." The album version was the first take they did in the studio.
Basically...
Alanis has had a crazy ride since her coming to fame after the release of Jagged Little Pill. She now can be found on Twitter and on Podcasts called Conversations with Alanis. She is known for discussing music, health & wellness, relationships, art, spirituality & more. So, to answer my coworkers question, What happened to Alanis Morissette? Nothing. She is just as strong and wise as ever. She even considers herself just as angry too, just with less reactivity and more activism.
