For the past several weeks, my Facebook timeline and Twitter feed have been flooded with images of Adele and her newly released single, “Hello.” It’s true. Adele is one phenomenal singer; her vocals are raw, powerful, pure, and magical, and she makes you feel all the emotions. So, yes. Adele is magnificent, and she deserves everyone’s praise and admiration. But I don’t want to talk about Adele. I want to talk about an artist who has a deliciously good voice. I want to talk about Tori Kelly. Some might remember Tori from her 2010 audition for American Idol, Season 9. Surprisingly, though, she didn’t make it to the live shows, and it was only a few years ago that her hard work finally earned her a spot in the limelight; Kelly performed on national television during the 2015 BET Awards and the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards.
Although she might not be considered a powerhouse singer like Adele or Beyoncé (yet), Tori Kelly is talented in her own right. Her live performances are exciting, entertaining, and upbeat, and her vocals are flawlessly pristine. Who doesn’t love listening to an artist who can actually sing? Tori Kelly creates a musical atmosphere that emphasizes her tremendous vocal talent. You won’t find any prerecorded tracks or engineered beats at a Tori Kelly concert. Instead, you’ll find an authentic vocalist singing authentic lyrics set to authentic melodies. It doesn’t get any better than that. Tori Kelly is one incredible artist, and just like Adele, she deserves to be praised and admired for her musical genius. If you’re wondering whether or not you should dip into the lovely world of Tori Kelly, then check out some of her lyrics below. I’m not lying when I say her music is pure gold.
“If you lose your soul, you’ll lose it all
If you’re at the top, then brace for the fall
Surrounded by faces, no one to call
Funny how it all goes around.” – Funny
No matter where you are in life – whether you’re enjoying the warm weather on a private island, or whether you’re struggling to support yourself on a daily basis, Tori reminds us to stay true to ourselves. It’s important to stay humble in this crazy life because you never know when your circumstances might change.
“But I know I’m still learning,
I know I’ll keep growing.
Baby I was born for this.
I’m not gonna sit around and do nothing,
But while I’m waiting
I might as well just spill my heart out on these pages.
And just be patient.
It’ll all be worth it.
It’ll all be worth it, in the end.” – Worth It
This was the first Tori Kelly song I ever listened to, and it was the first song that got me hooked. Through this slow, acoustic tune, Tori talks about the obstacles she has faced (and is still facing) as a vocalist. Even though she’s not receiving instant gratification for all of her efforts, she’s still willing to be patient. Good things come to those who wait, remember?
“Everybody’s talking ‘bout the next thing --
Feel like what they got ain’t good enough.
But all I wanna do is release the tension --
Bring the conversation back to us.” – Nobody Love
People never seem to be happy with their lot regardless of how many goods or commodities they might have. Tori encourages us to be content with the wonderful people and things we already have in our lives; if we never stop searching for something new, then we will never allow ourselves to be happy. And happiness is an emotion that everyone should experience.
“So if you’re out there I swear to be good to you,
But I’m done looking, for my future someone.
Cause when the time is right
You’ll be here, but for now…
Dear no one, this is your love song.” – Dear No One
Unlike what most people think, we don’t always have to be looking for our ‘future someone’. Let’s face it. That can be exhausting and time-consuming, and sometimes, we just have to focus on ourselves. It’s always a good thing to keep an open mind when it comes to love, but that doesn’t mean there’s a strict timeline you have to follow. Love just happens, and that’s why it’s so magical.
