Having started off at a community college in 2012 and transferring to UCF in 2015, I've learned a lot about the college experience throughout these six years. And for the new college students (transfer students and freshmen) who are looking for some help to get through it all, I'm here as a soon-to-be postgrad to offer you some real, genuine life advice.

Throughout my college career, I can't even tell you how many times I changed my major. Coming out of high school I knew I wanted to go to college but was afraid that since I didn't know what I wanted to do I would end up at a school only to find out what I'm passionate about isn't a major they offer. Fast forward two years and I end up at my absolute dream school. Being at UCLA felt like being home and that's how I felt when I first toured it back in high school.

I'm not naive enough to say that my transfer experience was wholly unique. However, while reading through the various articles claiming to give advice to college transfers, I had trouble finding anything that was really applicable to my situation, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I didn't transfer schools because the atmosphere felt wrong, or the classes weren't what I was looking for. I loved the school I went to my freshman year, and, sure, I wasn't super involved like some other people, but I was content where I was. I transferred schools that first time because I didn't have another choice. I simply could not afford to go there anymore.

Being a transfer student myself, I feel like the best advice for anyone who is even considering leaving their school would be from students who have gone through the process.

I started considering that I needed to switch my school in March of 2018. The college I was looking at, Rowan University, was only accepting applications until April 1st, which meant I had to make my final decision pretty quickly.

Your admission is valid.

1. You're going to have major FOMO no matter what.

2. There's a lot of pressure to maximize your college experience.

3. Dorming is fine. Commuting is fine. Getting an apartment is fine.

4. Hit the ground running.

5. It's ok to wear your school spirit.

6. GO to football games. GO to club events. MAKE friends! HAVE FUN.

7. Take pride in being a transfer.

8. You may get imposter's syndrome.

9. You'll probably have to ask an underclassman for directions.

10. Soak in every minute of University life, you only have 2 years of it.

11. Don't ever regret transferring.

12. You will meet other transfers!

13. Don't be afraid to run for Org. positions.

14. Do your research on your minor before your first week of school.

15. Don't be afraid to start something new at your University.

16. Acknowledge that you have less wiggle room than most students.

17. Your CC GPA and your University GPA may be different and THAT IS OK.

18. You may even find that the difference between your CC and your University ain't all that much.

19. You did not take the "easier" route.

20. Never stop advocating for Transfers and dispel the myths that you hear!

2. Take advantage of office hours.

3. Get involved.

4. Utilize your school's career services.

5. Save your money.

6. Keep in touch with your favorite professors.

7. Do volunteer work.

8. Take advantage of free stuff.

9. Remember you're on your own time.

But it's no walk in the park.
