Much of my generation may have never heard the name, “Stevie Nicks,” let alone been entirely influenced by her. She is a legend. A Gypsy, with her bohemian-witchy vibes. It isn’t just her persona that makes her legendary, it's also her music. She writes from a place of love and heartbreak. Many of her songs document her relationship Lindsey Buckingham, of whom she not only dated, but sang alongside for decades, despite their differences.
She recently decided that now was as good a time as any, to go back out on tour promoting her recently released album, “24k Gold: Songs from The Vault” a collection of songs which were never released on any of her albums from her solo career. I was lucky enough to witness her magic in Dallas, Texas over Halloween weekend.
The show opened with several songs performed by the Pretenders, followed by a short intermission, and then the entrance of Stevie herself. She sang a combination of songs; some newer, some well known that drove the crowd wild. She began with a couple of songs from her solo career, such as “Stop Dragging My Heart Around,” which was accompanied by Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders. She included a few Fleetwood Mac songs as well. Stevie’s voice has only gotten better with age. The kind of voice that conveys the feeling in the song, not just the lyrics. Her signature rasp still there. We were all a little shocked at the end of the show, something wasn’t right when she bid her farewell and disappeared into the shadows. Just as people began to leave, she emerged again. The opening riff of “Rhiannon” brought the crowd roaring back to life. The encore also included “Leather and Lace” to close the show. The only song missing was “Landslide,” one that I had been hoping for all night. In a way, I was disappointed, but thinking about it more I realize that there is a time and a place for such a powerful song, and this wasn’t it.
If you haven’t allowed yourself to be completely engulfed in the beautiful world of Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac, I suggest you do… immediately.
