So during Winter Storm Jonas, there wasn't much to do besides sit around and chill. So me and my friends played an unbelievable amount of rummy and solitaire. And in order to make it less boring, my friend, Andrew, played music from his vast library. And each time a Sara Bareilles song came on it was great. We all sang along, me less than everyone else because I can never remember lyrics properly, but it struck me how amazing of an artist she is. And then I got upset because I don't think she gets enough praise and attention. So get ready to fall in love with a new artist.
Sara Bareilles has been in the music industry for a long time, since graduating from UCLA in 2002, but she finally got her "big break" in 2007 after her single "Love Song" reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in late December. Bareilles has had soaring success since late 2007 and has released 5 albums since then.
I'm sure you've heard her songs, at the very least "Love Song," "Brave," and probably "I Choose You." But what I don't understand is how Sara Bareilles is still so underrated. I always hear people complaining about how fake and auto-tuned music is nowadays. Want to listen to something genuine and real? Sara Bareilles. Want to listen to something catchy? Sara Bareilles. Want to listen to some relaxing, chill music? Sara Bareilles.
Bareilles is such an amazing artist. Not only is her voice sweet and powerful, but she also taught herself how to play the piano, the guitar, the ukulele, and the harmonica. How cool is that? As a result, she sounds amazing in her records, and some argue that she's even better live.
But enough words from me. Here are some of her best songs, but also some of her lesser known songs.
1. King Of Anything
2. Hercules
3. Gravity
4. I Choose You
5. Eden
6. Brave
And that's just a few songs from her vast discography, so you should check out more of them. And if that's not enough for you, she wrote the music for "Waitress," a show that's coming soon to Broadway. Here's a synopsis for the show: Tony winner Jessie Mueller (Beautiful) is Jenna, a waitress and expert pie maker stuck in a small town and a loveless marriage. Faced with an unexpected pregnancy, Jenna fears she may have to abandon the dream of opening her own pie shop forever… until a baking contest in a nearby county and the town’s handsome new doctor offer her a tempting recipe for happiness. Supported by her quirky crew of fellow waitresses and loyal customers, Jenna summons the secret ingredient she’s been missing all along – courage.
I think that this show really reflects what Bareilles's music communicates to listeners, which is why Bareilles is the perfect songwriter for the show. Her music is incredibly relatable, she's talented, she's beautiful, and, most importantly, she's genuine and her music reflects this.
So, wake up, America! Go listen to more Sara Bareilles' songs and fall as in love with her as me and my friends are.
