I've been listening to Cher's music for a long time now, almost my entire life. She was actually the first person I saw in concert, and that was when I was eight years old. Cher was just someone that my mother listened to when I was growing up, so I just took to listening to her as well. With all that being said, I would have to say that Cher has taught me a thing or two about life lessons through her music. There is just something about her music that speaks to me and moves me in certain ways.
1. There is life after love.
Everyone goes through heartbreak at one time or another in their life, but what they have to understand is that life will go on after that heartbreak. Cher's "Believe" addresses this concept, and one lyric in the song is "Do you believe in life after love?". The music video also shows that you can move on after a breakup or after heart break and live your life.
2. The present is a gift. Don't waste it.
Cher's "If I Could Turn Back Time" addresses what you would do if you could go back in time and what I've learned from this song is that you have to live in the moment and not take anything for granted. Don't do something that you know you will regret in the future, because the truth is, you can't go back in time to change what you have done.
3. There will be times you feel alone, but remember you always have someone there for you.
Although Cher's "Song For The Lonely" may sound depressing, it is actually the opposite. This song shows us that although sometimes you may feel lonely or you may feel that you are by yourself, if you look hard enough there will always be someone there for you. Even if that someone is simply this song.
4. You may go through rough times, but you can make it through those times.
Cher's "You Haven't Seen The Last of Me" is featured in the movie "Burlesque" and it talks about how even if you're going through a rough time or you think that you are down on your luck, you can get back up and push through it. Like the title of the song says, you haven't seen the last of me can mean that you are not going to give up because of one little thing. You are going to push back and make it through your struggles.
5. You can't control what family you're born into.
Cher's "Half-Breed" talks about being born in more than one ancestry and also not being accepted by either part of what she is. I believe that this songs shows us that we can't control what family we are born into and we can't control who our ancestors are, so we should be proud of who we are no matter where we come from.
6. We can't always be dependent on others because one day, they may not be there.
While Cher's "We All Sleep Alone" may be about someone's love life, I really didn't catch on to that theme when I first heard this song. What I got out of this song is that we can't always depend on one person because there is going to come a time in your life when that person is no longer there for you for one reason or another. I'm not saying that we shouldn't depend on other people, because it is good to do that sometimes. What I'm saying is that we have to learn to do things on our own because sometimes we will be on our own and if we are constantly dependent on others, we won't be able to function in those times.
7. Everyone has scars in their lives, but if you love yourself, you can see past the scars.
Cher's "Favorite Scars" is one of my favorite songs, and I think it has to do with the fact that it shows us that everyone has scars and we all have a story behind those scars. Yet, it also shows us that love can help you move past the scars. If you love yourself and you love your scars, you can truly accomplish anything. I love the message behind this song and it makes me think about the scars that I have in my life and where they came from.
8. When you fail at something, try again and again.
I think that Cher's "Alive Again" is about failing at something but not giving up. I think when she sings those words, "Alive Again" that she is really talking about trying again. If you listen to the lyrics closely, I think you will get out the idea that I had. Although the song may not be able failing and trying again, that is what I got out of the song and that is what I've learned from Cher.
9. Sometimes you have to give up things in your life that may be bad for you.
Again, while Cher's "Strong Enough" may be about a love life, I learned something completely different from it. I've learned that in life you have to be strong enough to know what is good and what is bad for you. You may think something is good for you in life but in reality, it is really bad. You have to have the strength to walk away from it, whether it is a toxic relationship that you're in, or if it is something smaller like smoking. In the end if you have the strength, you will be able to walk away from the harmful things in your life.
10. It's a woman's world.
It is no longer a man's world. Cher's "Woman's World" shows us that its a woman's world and that we are capable of doing anything we set our mind to. It also shows us that women can do things that before only men were capable of doing and that women can do those things just aswell, if not better than the men.
Music is a funny thing because it is just like a piece of artwork; everyone can take away something different from a song depending on how they listened to it. Although the lessons I took from some of Cher's songs may not have been what they were actually about, I was still able to take something away from them and learn something.
