I'll probably (definitely) get made fun of for writing this, but if I've survived the past five years with this obsession, I think I can handle it now.
We all knew this day would come. Boy bands rarely last forever. I was getting pretty sick of people asking me: "Who's going to leave the band first?" "Who's going to go solo like Justin Timberlake?"
And after dodging that question in every way possible due to pure stubbornness, now their questions have been answered for real. :(
Honestly, it's no surprise that Zayn Malik was the first to go. It was pretty weird hearing Zayn's new single, "Pillowtalk," because it sounded like an unusually sexual One Direction song, minus the group harmonies. Like, dude, where's Harry, haha, and how are you swearing in this song?!
The group's fame has been waning for about two years now, compared to the first few. People told me that my interest would wane as well. And it did, until a new album would come out and I got sucked right back into my borderline scarily obsessive fangirl self (note my One Direction AF playlist on Spotify, which is just every album in one playlist).
It's kind of strange that this hiatus will likely be never ending. It's kind of weird that I won't be able to go to another concert (definitely would be made fun of if I went to another one at this age so maybe this is good).
I'd like to take the rest of this time to remember the heyday of this band through extremely attractive and depressing GIFs/pictures as a tribute to all those years of knowing every single fact about each member/every word to a song/their whereabouts at any time/owning several social media accounts dedicated solely to them. (I'm not proud of myself.)
The video diaries in which almost everyone started their journey of horrifying obsession.
Wow OK, the beginning, a.k.a. straight up babies.
When Liam straightened his hair?
Tears.
Why isn't "One Thing" played more often? LMK it is a JAM.
Must we forget them WITH PUPPIES?!
I think they were running out of music video ideas at this point but still cute, so whatev .
Then they grew up really quickly all of a sudden.
Definitely never actually saying goodbye, it's just a formality since it may be the end soon. Here's to solo careers and a hopeful reunion tour in the future. :-(
