Recently, I was watching the season finale of one of my favorite shows "New Girl," and as everyone was falling deeper in love with *spoiler alert* the newlyweds, Schmidt and Cece, I was falling in love with that little song playing in the background of their ceremony. Those people choosing the soundtrack for television and movies really know what they are doing, let me tell you. The song I am referring to is Swedish artist, Seinabo Sey's "Still." Now, I had never heard of her before, but perhaps I am just [gasp] a tad out of the loop.
The heart of the song and where you'll find the inspiration for the title can be found in the chorus. Seinabo beautifully sings,
I still remember me before you. I will no longer need your rescue, since I still remember me before you. I'm no fool. Tell 'em, I'm no fool.
Even though on the surface it seems it's about a romantic relationship, that is not why I relate or love it so much. I also think one could listen and think of a friendship, or even a version of themselves that they are breaking away from. Personally, I think of the song as a metaphor for realizing who you truly want to be and what you need to do to get there. My favorite lines in the song are in the very beginning:
I've been thinking 'bout tomorrow, instead of drowning in the past. Oh, we had good times even back when dreams were all we had to last. So, as I wake up this bright morning nothing's gonna bring me down.
As I begin the last half of my college career in the coming months with two years under my belt unable to alter, I've really been thinking about my future; where I want to be, what I want to be, and who I want there by my side. This song could not have come at a more perfect time, as these thoughts are constantly bouncing around in my head. I know that no matter what happens, nothing's gonna bring me down.
Take a listen and I'll tell 'em, you're no fool.
