The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Not even 100 years ago, Nazis began arresting Jews in Germany and Austria to place them in concentration and death camps. Shortly after that, Japanese Americans were being placed in internment camps on the West Coast in the U.S.
Hate and racism built these camps and they're building them again at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Right now, thousands of migrants and asylum-seekers of all ages are being held in disgusting, unimaginable conditions. So many Americans are silent right now, turning a blind eye to the realities they'll probably never know.
If I were to tell you about a place where families are captured because of their cultural background, taken to camps where they are tortured, starved, and deprived of everything. The children separated from their parents and will probably never see them again. People dying, their bodies are disposed of like they're trash.
You're probably picturing the holocaust. I'm actually describing the "migrant detention centers" along the border.
These camps are dangerously overcrowded, they lack basic necessities, and are hotspots for disease. Children are forced to sleep on the floor, and the lights stay on all night. Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez paid the camps a visit at the beginning of July. She later tweeted that women were not given water and were told to drink out of the toilet. She also tweeted that some women hadn't showered in over 15 days, and the only soap they are provided is a tiny packet of shampoo.
Consider that politicians are probably being shown the nicest areas in the camps. If the nicest areas are this disturbing, what are they hiding in the worst areas?
Women are being sexually assaulted in ICE facilities. There was even a Facebook group where border patrol and ICE officers shared extremely disturbing and xenophobic memes and jokes about the detainees. Dozens of people have died in ICE custody just since Trump took office.
Although many people are outraged and are donating anything they can to try and help these people, there are still too many Americans trying to justify this treatment at the border. "Well, they knew what would happen if they tried to come here illegally." "Why can't they just come here legally?"
So, you're telling me that if someone is willing to risk ending up in a concentration camp because their home country is that bad, they don't deserve to be here? Also, it takes some people years and years to get citizenship in this country. There's something wrong there, don't you think?
