8 Awesome Things About The Holiday Season

1. Getting to see family and friends

I have reached the age where all of my closest friends are either living with their spouses and have a "adult" job, or have graduated and are engaged. We are all in different places in our lives and it's difficult for us to find time to get together. When we all get together again for the holidays, it's a special treat for us all. This is about what our reunion looks like.

2. Thanksgiving feast

For my family, my grandma's house has always been the place of gathering for this holiday ritual. We all potluck all kinds of food, from homemade bread to hot and juicy turkey. Although we all try and chip in, my grandma loves to whip up way more food than we could even think about consuming. Her specialty, in my opinion, is her pumpkin pie. I can't ever get enough of that stuff (I am her favorite grandchild, so she always makes an extra one for me). She used to own a pie shop in Xenia, Ohio cooking her delicious treats for everyone, but now her secret recipe is exclusive to our family.

3. The "after feast nap"

After stuffing our faces with all that we can eat, we commence watching football games during which we all inevitably fall asleep.

4. Black Friday shopping

Black Friday shopping is always hectic. People go crazy over blowing their hard earned money on things they don't need. Remember the Nintendo Wii? Who actually still plays with that thing? Nevertheless, I have to be honest. I get sucked into this too. I mean the deals are amazing, right?

5. Ugly Christmas sweaters

It always seems to be a competition to see who can come up with the most crazy, elaborate sweater, but they always make me laugh and are a lot of fun to wear and see all the weird looks you get.

6. Holiday movies

Everyone has their own favorite holiday movie to watch. For my family, it's "A Christmas Story". Maybe if I'm lucky this year, I'll get an official Red Ryder Carbine-action two-hundred shot range model air rifle.

7. Snow

Here in Ohio we are pretty used to snow. My friends from out-of-state think we are crazy for being so used to the "blizzards" we get here. Personally, I love the snow, as long as I don't get caught having to drive in it. Have some fun this holiday season and go play in the snow. You're never too old to get into a snowball fight with some of your friends.

8. Christmas lights

Everyone from Ohio has either heard about or been to Clifton Mill for the Christmas lights. With over 3.5 million lights, this is a spectacular light show you will not want to miss this season.

9. Santa Claus

No matter how old you get, when you see jolly ol' St. Nick, he's bound to put a smile on your face this holiday season. Here's to hoping you all have a wonderful holiday season this year, stuff your face, throw some snow, and enjoy the company of your family and friends.

Happy holidays!

New England Summers Are The BEST Summers

Why you should spend your next summer in New England.

Three years ago, I chose to attend college in Philadelphia, approximately 360 miles away from my small town in New Hampshire. I have learned many valuable lessons away from home, and have thoroughly enjoyed my time spent in Pennsylvania. One thing that my experience has taught me, however, is that it is absolutely impossible to beat a New England summer.

Yes, the math major is doing a math-related post. What are the odds? I'll have to calculate it later. Many people have probably learned about the Fibonacci sequence in their high school math classes. However, I thought I would just refresh everyone's memories and show how math can be beautiful and apply to physical things everywhere around us with stunning examples.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
