We’re all familiar with Mario’s song "Let Me Love You." That song that came out in 2004, and you have probably heard once or twice since. If you don’t remember, click here and get back to me. Well, I recently gave it a second listen and feel that this song deserves a second, closer listen. So let’s discuss.
This song was nominated for a Grammy, and won multiple awards including a Billboard Music Award for Top R&B Vocal Performance. In the song, Mario is proclaiming to his “baby” that she should let him be the man to love her, to protect and to care for her. The song includes multiple beautiful lines like “You’re the type of woman (deserves things good)” and “Let me be the one to give you everything you want and need.” Everything you would want to hear right? The perfect man, right? Well…
Let’s look at one particularly striking line in this beautiful R&B love ballad. Mario sings, “You’re a dime plus 99, and it’s a shame you don’t even know what your worth.”
So, why is this line so interesting to me? Let’s break this down. Mario says “You’re a dime” a.k.a 10 cents “plus 99”. This means that Mario is valuing his baby, his love, the woman he wants to give everything to, at $1 and nine cents. If you don’t understand the true value of $1.09 here are a few things you could buy for that amount of money.
1. About 4 gum balls from your average vending machine.
Just remember, we have no idea how long they have been sitting in that container.
2. One can of soup.
With a coupon, because, let's face it, soup is expensive! (Girl's gotta eat, though, so I'm not complaining.)
3. Any sketchy item from the dollar store.
From 99-cent pregnancy tests, to these ostriches posing as dogs, the dollar store may not be the place you go to get your shopping done.
4. Mario’s girl.
I implore you to give this song another play, listen and laugh as Mario, a Grammy nominee compares the girl he loves to $1 and nine cents.
