Every single day, millions of people turn to music. They use music for entertainment, as an escape, as a way to express themselves and so much more.
One artist that has really affected my life lately is Meghan Trainor. Trainor gained popularity a few years ago, but it wasn't until a few months ago, when I heard her album "Title" for the first time, that I truly realized what an inspiration she is.
A few of her biggest hits include "All About that Bass," "Dear Future Husband," "Like I'm Gonna Lose You (feat. John Legend)," "Lips Are Movin',"and her latest, "Me Too."
Aside from her biggest hits, there are some lesser-known tracks from her album "Title" that have impacted my life and the way I view and love myself and others.
For instance, the song "Title" tells the story of a guy not wanting to settle down with a woman and give her a "title." For years, I have allowed toxic relationships like this to overwhelm my life. After hearing this song, I realized how toxic my relationship, or lack thereof, at the time was. I realized that I deserve better than someone who claims they want me, but won't commit to me. This was a great step in learning to love myself, because I deserve so much better.
Also featured on "Title," is a track called "What If I." I instantly loved the song when I first heard it, but am just now realizing how important it is in my life. The lines, "'Cause you're the first guy who's taken me out and has taken his time, yes you are babe, no you ain't trying to get in my bed on the very first night," taught me that in order to love myself, I must be loved and respected by my significant other. This song, and those lyrics especially, taught me that my current relationship is one I need to cherish, because I finally have it right -- a man who loves me and respects me and never wants to hurt me.
Her music is so honest, pure and true. She says the things nobody seems to want to talk about. Although some of her songs might come off a little "strong" or "inappropriate" or may portray her as "conceited," the overall message is truly inspiring. The greatest thing Meghan Trainor has taught me, is how to love myself.
I have always secretly had self-confidence and self-esteem issues. It's always something I try to hide and overcome. Trainor taught me that in a world that is constantly criticizing you for every little thing, it is okay to love yourself. It's OK to express yourself any way you'd like. After listening to her music, I am bold and courageous. I believe in myself and know that I can accomplish anything. I don't have to live up to society's beauty standards to consider myself beautiful. I no longer fear what others think about me.
So, Meghan Trainor, thank you. Thank you for making me believe in myself. Thank you for helping me fall in love with my true self. Thank you for showing me that it's not about your outer beauty, but your inner beauty. And lastly, thank you for using your music and your voice to inspire and motivate so many people.
You have truly shown me that with a little bit of hard work, anything is possible -- from writing your own music to loving yourself.
