It seems that natural disasters are becoming more commonplace in our country, seemingly striking in silence and causing complete catastrophe in their wake.

Those were the circumstances of the Nashville tornado that hit the city late last night. According to CNBC, "At least 19 people were killed, others were injured, and 50,000 households and businesses were left without power..."

Haitians Post-Earthquake And What You Should Know About Their Status In The United States

Temporary Protected Status, established by the United States Congress in 1990, is designated by the United States Department of Homeland Security in cases where citizens of a country are unable to live or return safely to their country of origin or if the country in question is incapable of receiving its nationals . This could be due to armed conflicts, environmental disasters, epidemics, or other "extraordinary" conditions (Danticat, 1). When Temporary Protected Status is provided it is granted for eighteen months at a time and can be renewed by the Department of Homeland Security, sometimes in conference with the State Department and the Secretary of State (Danticat, 2). One very important aspect of Temporary Protected Status to note is that it does not offer a path to citizenship even while it allows one to apply for a work permit and driver's license and protects the individual from deportation (Danticat, 3).

Most people can say that they've endured some kind of natural disaster. In grade school when the days got a little too stormy, they'd cancel school meaning you got to sit at home and watch TV while the rain gently ran down your roof. Maybe the wind would blow a bit too hard and a tree branch would tap against the glass of your window, practically asking if it could come inside for some protection. Occasionally when the storm got a little too strong the power would flicker in and out, your family would gather some candles and flashlights and have them at the ready, but they were more of a precaution above anything else.

I Put My Grief Aside For My Community And Got A Surprising Response

On Sunday, March 3, 2019, my community and hometown was changed forever. An EF4 tornado came through the small community of Beauregard making its way through Salem, Smith's Station, all in Alabama near Auburn University and on over into Talbotton, Georgia. The storm leveled most homes in its path and left at this time 23 confirmed dead and dozens injured. It is going down in history as one of the deadliest of all time and the deadliest since 2013.

I Lost My Home in the Woolsey Fires — Is Climate Change To Blame?

It's been four months since I've been home. It's been four months since I last sat on my bed staring at my corkscrew board covered with frozen memories from when I was little to now. It's been four months since I walked down the stained and intricately woven Persian rug, my mom has had since I was born, stretching from one end of the house to another. It's been four months since I sat outside on the porch, watching the trees sway back and forth in the last golden rays of sun. Home is where I learned how to ride a bike without training wheels, it's where my youngest brother took his first steps as a baby. It's where I grew up for fifteen years of my life. I woke up and fell asleep to the sound of waves crashing against the headlands of Point Dume in Malibu, California.

The video was the view from the driver's seat of a man and his daughter who you can hear talking in the background, some of you may have seen it. In the video, you hear the conversation between the father and his child as they drive down a road surrounded by flames on both sides of them.
