I was not born here in Georgia but I have lived here long enough to pick up some things that are proven to only make sense if you live here.
1. You only live in Atlanta:
Before moving here, when I told people where I'm moving to, they would never know where unless I said it was Atlanta. When you say your from Atlanta, but you are really from a small town.
"Oh where are you moving to?"
"Oh that seems exciting"
2. It's all about sir and ma'am:
Everyone here older or younger uses sir and ma'am as a sign of respect. I moved to Georgia from the New Jersey. This term is huge in Georgia so if you are thinking of moving here, you have to get used to the southern hospitality. Once you start saying it, you will never break out of it.
3. Shane Company at ShaneCo.com
If you have not heard this ad, memorized it already, and know all their deals you know you haven't lived here long enough or are not from Georgia. In almost every car ride, I've heard this ad. Also Shane Company you are welcome for the free promotion.
4. "Snow" Flurries = utter panic
The entire state of Georgia will shutdown as soon there is a slight bit of chance it would snow. Back in 2018, the governor of Georgia announced that schools should close the next day due to "snow." The grocery stores were wiped clean with people buying food as if we were going to get a massive snowstorm that could last up to a week. The "snow" day turned out to be a bright and sunny day with clear skies. Snow and Georgia do not mix well together don't
5. Sweet Tea and Coke
Pepsi? Never heard of it. The coke headquarters is located here in Atlanta and was founded so it's only right if you drink it here. So many people only drink sweet tea and coke. The standard drink here is either sweet tea or coke. It has to be sweet or else, it is not Georgia approved.
6. HOPE and Zell Miller Scholarship
As a high school student, these two scholarships are very important and you are expected to at least be qualified for it. If you have good grades and work hard, you have a chance to earn it so stay motivated.
7. Chick-Fil-A is a staple food
Here is Georgia, going to Chick-Fil-A is a must and is so good! We all also exactly what we get each time and once we pick, we keep. If you don't see all the high school kids who have cars carry around their drink or go get food for lunch, do you really live in Georgia?
8. The endless number of Peachtree Streets
My best friend once drove down to Georgia with her mom and whenever she got lost, I would text her asking her where. No surprise she would say peachtree street. I guess it's called a peach state for a reason
- Y'all is a word
- It's either At-lan-TA or At-lan-A
- The heat is a horrible combination of dryness and humidity
- You park your car based on the shade even if you have to walk miles to your destination
- You can never predict the weather
- Pollen - yellow dust that is impossible to get rid of on your car
- Hotlanta - do not say this to people who live here. It is not cool or funny
- Bless your heart!!
Georgia is really a beautiful state with sunshine, great food, and amazing people. I am glad to call this state my home.
