Our America

The thoughts of a college student.

Our America is always changing and evolving into what we make of it. There are many opinions that vary differently between people. I am one of those different and odd opinions. During the election, I felt as if I knew nothing of the world around me. I knew nothing of the bigger picture. I could not decide on which candidate to vote for. It was not a lack of trying, I simply did not have the knowledge to make the best informative decision I possibly could. So, since I was so indecisive about who to vote for I decided to not vote at all. Many people think this to be a foolish idea to act upon and suggested I vote even if I did not agree with some of the candidate's views. The reason they have this view was because not voting means I wasted my vote. I do not share the same view.

My reason for not voting is due to not understanding all of the facts about all the candidates. Voting without the facts causes you to regret the vote if you find out the candidate isn’t the type you wanted. I have talked to many people who have had vastly different views from me. I met two young women who held a sign saying Donald Trump is a racist. Puzzled, I spoke with them and asked “aren’t you concerned someone will confront you about your sign?” they shook their heads and replied: “We want them to ask about it so we can express our opinions”. I thought this strange since to me it would seem to only bring controversy and a lot of disagreement. I worry about all the different opinions and I hope that eventually, all this with Donald Trump will soon calm down. This is all simply my opinion and I hope that I haven’t offended anyone with my wondering thoughts. I muse over the different aspects of our America and wonder about how different one generation is to the next.

When I was a child, I used to look forward to Memorial Day Weekend from the time I returned to school after Christmas vacation. I remember how exciting summer was when I was a kid. I would just be eagerly waiting for school to end so that I could fly to some exotic location with my family for the summer. Or hang out with my friends every day. Or just lay around in bed or read, paint, draw, basically do whatever.

When we think of events that have transpired in the US over the last few years, a lot of it ends up in spotlighting the division in the country. However, things across the pond seem to be no better - at least when it comes to sports. Last week, Real Madrid - arguably the richest sports franchise in the world, had one of their Brazilian strikers subject to vicious racist attacks in Valencia. The player, Vini Jr posted this example video in his Insta account:
