The Front Bottoms are a band that formed in 2008 in New Jersey. They're incredibly underrated given their amazing EP’s and all three of their albums. While The Front Bottoms have a great indie-rock type sound, the unique thing about them remains their witty and beautiful lyrics. Here are some of The Front Bottom’s best lines:
10. “She says you’ve gotta promise not to break, no matter how far you are bent”
This is a line from the self titled album: “The Front Bottoms”. It belongs in the second verse of the song “Rhode Island” about a boy they met on tour in Rhode Island, who they later saw in New York because he had followed his dream and began his bike trip from Maine to Florida.
9. “They say the good thing about, plastic flowers is, you could spray them with any type of perfume”
The song “Plastic Flowers” is from their newest album, “Back on Top”. A theory about this song is that it takes place in a funeral, although the first few lines are clearly set in a hospital. The song starts with just an organ and an acoustic guitar, giving it a church-like feeling. It then speeds up, somewhat indicating the hard parts of moving on after a death.
8. “All of the sudden I am scared. All of the sudden I can’t breathe. All of the sudden I am nothing, in this moment, you are everything.”
One of the best lines of their heartbreaking song “Bathtub” off of their self titled album. When asked what it is about, lead singer Brian Sella replied, “There is so much to this song. Take it for what it’s worth.”
The song seems as if it is about trying to forget about the past-- approaching the idea that you can scrub away all of the bad things you have done, but ultimately failing to do exactly that.
7. “Right now I’m just a volcano, on the brink of eruption. Right now I’m just a psycho hell-bent on self destruction.”
This is one of the most hard-hitting lines of their song “West Virginia,” which is one of the most upbeat songs they have made. The beginning of the song matches the sad lyrics better than the rest, it is about a loved one moving on. This song is found on their album “Back on Top”
6. “And I am confident, even if it makes no sense, I will say ‘I love you’ back to the love that I am given.”
This line is from the song “Looking Like You Just Woke Up” from their self titled album. This song actually has a very interesting meaning. Overall it is about holding onto someone, but there is a story behind the song. One of their friends fell in love with a girl who still had a boyfriend. In order to spend time with her, he became friends with the boyfriend and hung out with the two of them together. As time went on he realized the girl was not who he thought she was; she was quite mean. He then found that the person he really loved was her boyfriend.
5. “I could stand up, I could man up, it’s just so convenient to be fragile”
This line is from the appropriately named song, “the boredom is the reason i started swimming, it’s also the reason i started sinking” usually referred to as “The Boredom…” from their self titled album. There is more meaning to the song than this, but the background is about when the lead singer was lost in Berlin on thanksgiving. He met a drug dealer who was actually quite nice and let him stay with him overnight. The man told Brian (lead singer) all about the people of Berlin; Brian directly quotes him in the chorus.
4. “I’m alone only half the time, the other half, I am only hiding”
This is a line from the amazing song “Legit Tattoo Gun” from their self-titled album. It is about a time that he had a thing with a girl who hooked up with a lot of other guys. In the bridge he refers to himself as a frozen puddle, and the girl is the sun, but she cannot melt the ice because there is something (a tree, in the song) in the way.
3. “And we have these parties for the way it was but once the booze is gone, is it worth the buzz?”
This line is from the song “Awkward conversations” from their EP “Rose”. The EP consists of 6 songs, Mat’s (drummer) grandmother's favorite songs. His Grandmother was named Rosemary. The song seems to be about a relationship with a very selfish person who put herself before others.
2. “I will stop doing all these things the doctor tells me not to do, but I don’t think he understands, I do all of these things for you.”
This is a line from one of the only real love songs the band has. Almost all songs are about past relationships and breakups, but “Jim Bogart” is a very heartwarming song, even though it seems the relationship does not work out. This song also appears on the EP “Rose”.
1. “Let’s talk about the face of our love and the how it might look with the addition of tattooed tears”
This amazing line comes from the song “Tattooed Tears” from their album “Talon of the Hawk”. This song faces the hard fact that no matter how much you may love someone, there is not always a happy ending. This song is supposed to be written about the same girl the song “Twin Size Mattress” was written about, meaning his music most likely got in the way of his happy ending.
