It’s hard to believe that the gem that is “Love Song” was released almost 10 years ago. From its signature piano intro to the powerful chorus, the song is pure gold.
There were plenty of songs about falling in love when “Love Song” came out, but you were in middle school or entering high school around this time and probably didn’t understand the meaning behind those songs yet. So instead, you belted out the lyrics:
“I'm not gonna write you a love song/ 'Cause you ask for it/ 'Cause you need one, you see.”
Many people thought that Sara Bareilles was pressured by her record label to write a love song because those songs produced the most success, but Bareilles told her record label that she wouldn’t do this, producing the pop culture phenomenon that was “Love Song.” However, this never actually happened.
The truth is that she was frustrated with the feedback from her co-writers at the time and decided to make a change. She says, “I started to get really insecure about it, and then I got really pissed off at myself for caring what anybody thought… I went to a rehearsal space one day. I sat down and wrote something for me. And ’Love Song’ basically wrote itself.”
This only took her about 30 minutes.
Despite its lyrics, she told The Huffington Post last year that “Love Song” is actually a love song.
"It was a love song to my craft. It was a love song to my intention, to my heart and soul. I was fighting for the essence of some truth inside of me, which to me is a beautiful love song,” she says.
She never had any formal musical training growing up, but instead taught herself how to play piano. Pretty impressive right? Plus look how cool and fun she looks. And she’s 36.
Since “Love Song,” Sara Bareilles has enjoyed success with other hits like “Brave,” “King of Everything,” and “Bottle It Up.” She also wrote songs for the Broadway musical “Waitress,” and released an album inspired by it last year. She even wrote a book that was published last year! This girl is obviously full of talent.
Taylor Swift even invited her on stage during Swift's Red tour to sing her song “Brave.”
Sara Bareilles seems to be enjoying an impressive musical career and shows no signs of slowing down. Although there are other artists who have had more success and are more well-known than her, no one can deny the magic that is “Love Song.”
So go ahead: listen and revel in the romantic angst of your pre-teen or teen years:
“Babe, I'll walk the seven seas when I believe that there's a reason to write you a love song today, today.”
