How Amy Klobuchar Could Spoil Sanders And Warren And Hand The Iowa Caucuses To Biden

The Democratic Iowa caucuses is less than a week away, and current polls show Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden are neck-and-neck to win in the Hawkeye State. One potential spoiler for the more progressive candidates in the race could be Sen. Amy Klobuchar. Klobuchar is the moderate senator from Minnesota, and her supporters are more keen on strengthening the Affordable Care Act rather than supporting Medicare for All.

In the Iowa caucuses, supporters gather in different places, like school gyms, or even living rooms, and stand in groups to support their candidate. If a candidate's group does not equal or surpass 15 percent of the entire group of participants in the room, then they have to make a second choice until there are no more groups smaller than 15 percent.

Klobuchar's supporters are more than likely to support another moderate candidate (like Biden or Buttigieg) if her groups do not reach 15 percent of the pack. Currently, Klobuchar is polling around 8 percent in Iowa, meaning her supporters could end up going straight to Biden if they don't meet that threshold.

What does this mean for Sanders and Warren?

Due to Klobuchar supporters being less liberal among others, 8 percent could boost Biden from around 22 percent to 30 percent making him the clear winner in the caucuses. Warren and Sanders are on the more progressive and liberal wing of the party, and basically have to win over their own supporters to win the caucuses. Biden and Buttigieg have to hope Klobuchar's supporters do not make up 15 percent of the group.

We still have a week to go, and so much can happen. We'll have to wait and see what happened next Monday. And don't forget, we still have a long way to go in this race.
