BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit youth empowerment and mentoring organization created by Beverly Bond. It was established to promote the arts for young women of color as well as encourage dialog and analysis of the ways women of color are portrayed in the media. Black Girls Rock partners with BET to make sure the show is broadcasted worldwide every year since 2010.
This year's performances included Corinne Bailey-Rae, Monica, Marsha Ambrosius, Brandy, Gladys Knight, Lauryn Hill, Andra Day, and last but never least Jazmine Sullivan. All of the performances were beautiful and heartfelt but Jazmine’s had a deeper message.
As Jazmine graced the stage the camera spotlighted her background dancers. These dancers weren’t just your typical athletic and petite dancers; it included women of all sizes. To see a plus size dancer on any stage is about as rare as seeing a unicorn. Who better then Ms. Sullivan to break that barrier?
Jazmine performed her song Masterpiece (Mona Lisa) that matched up perfectly with the message of her performance. The lyrics say “Every part of me is a vision of a portrait of Mona, of Mona Lisa, every part of me is beautiful, and I finally see I'm a work of art, a masterpiece”. These lyrics are so powerful and inspiring. Encouraging listeners to love themselves and see themselves as a work of art that was not just made but created for a special purpose.
Society often makes women feel ashamed of their body if we don’t look like the women on the TV screens and magazines. It is only a recent development that more women with natural curves are showcased on a large platform like television as someone beautiful. “Who is this I've tried so long find? Filling my heads with lies that I'm not good enough, then I heard something in my ear, tell me I'm perfect, now that I know the truth, Time to show and prove.” Hearing these lyrics with the image of women that I can actually relate too physically almost moved me to tears, and I do not think that I was alone when I felt that emotion.
To see women of all shapes, sizes and brown skin tones dancing with purpose is something I am sure that many viewers will not forget. Thank You Jazmine Sullivan for being a voice for women of all shapes and reminding us that we are beautiful masterpieces.
