With so many artists and musicians in the world today, it can be hard for new groups to find their niche and to stand out from the competition. However, the electronic Japanese pop duo FEMM has managed to do just that, with their quirky backstory, English lyrics, and full-on girl power songs.
SyFy in pop music? Bring it!
This video marks the start of FEMM, which stands for Far East Mention Mannequin. The group currently features two members, RiRi and LuLa, who are portrayed as mannequins trying to liberate mannequins all over the world. The singers go to great lengths to keep up their mannequin personas, dancing and walking with rigid, jerky movements. Sometimes they are even carried off the stage! If the whole mannequin/robot aspect is too gimmicky for you, don't let it deter you from listening to their music! Not only are all their songs in English, but they focus on very human emotions.
A prime example of this is FEMM's song "Unbreakable," which follows along the lines of Kelly Clarkson's single, "What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger)."
Well, it's like Clarkson's song minus the breakup
This song embodies the unbreakable spirit of humans, how we continue to thrive and live despite the hardships and struggles we face. The chorus captures this beautifully:
Unbreakable, unshakable
Built a house on the rock that will never fall
So unbreakable
Another broken heart
From a world apart
Now we’re stronger than ever, that’s what we are
So unbreakable
A little bit more motivating than standing a little taller, don't you think?
Even their upbeat numbers stay true to human experience and the strength of women. While these two components show up to some degree in all of FEMM's songs, they manifest prominently in the lyrics of "PoW." Which, coincidentally, is my favorite song by FEMM.
Heck yeah, Cupid's got nothing on me!
One of the great things about FEMM is that even though they have a limited discography, their songs still capture a wide variety of feelings and moods. From the more melodic "Flood the Night" to the party anthem "Girl's Night Out," FEMM consistently stays true to their image. While their song address themes most other pop artists do - partying, relationships, and believing in yourself - FEMM keeps a consistent girl-power theme throughout them. This is what ultimately causes FEMM's music to stand out, as so many pop songs today portray women as needing to be in a relationship to be successful. Forget the guys, grab your girls, and party all night to FEMM!
