If you're like me, from the minute you heard "Closer" for the first time, you were hooked and have been continually listening to it for a few weeks now. The song is the perfect tribute to heart breaks, nostalgia, and why it is never a good idea to hook up with your ex. Alex Pall, a member of Chainsmokers, puts it best: “The song is sort of comical in nature, we wanted to make a feel good song about meeting your ex, falling for them on a physical level and then remembering all the horrible truths about why it didn’t work out. So hopefully the lyrics evoke some sort of emotional connection to people but we want people to have fun with it.”
This is the first time Chainsmokers member Drew Taggart has contributed vocals to one of their songs, and successfully, might I add. The combination of the Chainsmokers sound with Halsey's talent makes it impossible not to become obsessed with the song. Halsey adds depth that puts it on a whole different level than if Drew had been the only one singing. The duet turns the song into a sort of failed love story, relatable to most everyone.
The lyrics begin with the singer admitting that he had problems that contributed to the crumbling of the relationship-- alcoholism, struggling financially or maybe he did something that made all her friends turn against him. After 4 years of no contact, he runs into her at a hotel bar. When Halsey comes in after the first chorus, she says that when she sees him again, she begins to wonder why she left. Meeting again brings back good memories and an overwhelming sense of nostalgia. So naturally, like many have done after reconnecting with an ex, they hooked up. The closing line of the chorus and the song is "we ain't ever getting older". The line implies that being together made them feel like teenagers again, young, free, and in love. It feels like the fire between them has not died at all. Unfortunately, when the bubble breaks and the clock strikes midnight, they remember all the reasons they broke up. This song is, in a sense, a warning to others to be careful before rekindling a fire with an ex- love, even if there is still a spark.
If I haven't convinced to you listen to "Closer" yet, then I don't know if anyone can. After rising to the top of the Billboard 100, the feel- good song is sure to be one that will be known and played for a long time to come.
