Many people are extremely against surrogacy. Some people think that the physical aspects of surrogacy can be considered similar to prostitution. The reason people think this is because women are selling physical, intimate, bodily services to the intended parents for money. Most people think that giving birth should be something that is done in private and should involve emotional attachment.
People who are against surrogacy believe that surrogacy forces the surrogate to emotionally detach herself from the baby and therefore she is unable to form a natural bond with the child. It is essential that during pregnancy the mother bonds with her baby.
In a recent case study, Queensland’s first surrogate mother donated her eggs and was a surrogate mother for two of her gay friends. After the baby was conceived, she regretted her decision because she felt as if she gave her baby away. She wished she had never become a surrogate mother. Surrogacy should be illegal because it does not respect the rights of the surrogate mother and is very similar to prostitution.
Some people are against surrogacy because the world is already overpopulated and there are many kids that need to be adopted. Some children’s parents have died from cancer or war and need someone to adopt them. In other cases the parents cannot afford to take care of their child.
An argument that people against surrogacy make is that it is important to take care of the children that are already alive instead of making more children in a world that is already overpopulated. In addition, some people are against surrogacy because it is very expensive. People who are not wealthy are unable to pay for a surrogate mother and they are not given equal rights.
It is not fair to the lower class families because they will never be able to afford to have a surrogate mother. This goes against the ethical principle of justice. In addition, commercial surrogacy is legal in India and people believe that this is exploiting the Third World women as baby machines. I believe surrogacy should be illegal.
