In case you missed it, Lady Gaga just released her fourth studio album, Joanne, which sounds noticeably different than any of her previous work. 'Joanne'is full of country and folk influences, which is a jump from Gaga's usual pop/dance sound. If you don't want to listen to the entire thing, that's okay, just listen to these five songs.
1. 'Perfect Illusion'
You've probably heard this one, as it was the leading single from the album. While it didn't receive the most enthusiastic reviews from critics, 'Perfect Illusion' is still a fantastic song. It's equal parts rock-n-roll and EDM, and it represents Gaga's old and new styles. Her voice is strong and powerful, and the way she pronounces the word 'love' in the chorus will make you want to scream and shout and jump until you collapse from exhaustion. This song is a party for the ears, and it's one of the standout songs from the album.
2. 'A-YO'
This song serves as the album's third single, and it's a strong one. Gaga's voice is raspy and inviting, and the beat makes you want to dance. Fans of 'ArtPop' will be reminded of the song 'MANiCURE,' complete with the pulsing energy and hand claps. Even though this song is relatively stripped back, Gaga's voice takes center stage.
3. 'Dancin' In Circles'
This song was written with Beck, and it sounds closest to the Gaga that we all know and love. While the lyrics are mildly scandalizing, the reggae/Bollywood vibes and Gaga's vocals on the chorus are captivating. This song is the ultimate jam and probably reminds Little Monsters everywhere of Gaga's 'Fame' era days.
4. 'Sinner's Prayer'
A compilation with Father John Misty, this song showcases Gaga's pseudo-country turnaround. The guitar strums during the intro and the transition between dark and light is reminiscent of Johnny Cash. 'Sinner's Prayer' is a perfect example of how an artist like Lady Gaga can make a successful transition between genres while staying true to their sound.
5. 'Come to Mama'
'Come to Mama' is joyful and bright and is definitely a feel good song. It has a 70's vibe, and Gaga's vocals are all show-biz and exaggeration. The lyrics are somewhat sassy and sobering, a reminder that everyone in the world needs to get along and that Lady Gaga can help in this uniting.
While 'Joanne' is definitely different from Gaga's previous work, it shows a more emotional, relatable and vulnerable side to her that she hasn't really shown to the world before. 'Joanne' is stripped back and raw, and it represents the beginning of a new era for Gaga. She's still slaying.
