For those of you who don't follow sports, or you know, live under a rock, 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been getting a lot of heat lately for his decision to kneel, instead of stand, during the national anthem. In fact, a recent poll showed that Kaepernick is the most disliked player in the NFL. Kaepernick is protesting America's police brutality and social injustice. He hoped his refusal to stand for a flag representative of a country that continues to oppress its citizens would spark a conversation and elicit change.
Conversely, it sparked a completely different debate: whether he was disrespecting the country and its military by refusing to stand.
If you haven't looked at your Facebook feed lately, I'll fill you in: people lost their minds. Critics told Kaepernick he doesn't deserve to play football or represent our country. There are even various petitions going around to bench, fire, or remove Kaepernick from the NFL. From OJ's murder trial to Micheal Vick's dogfighting ring to Adrian Peterson's child abuse scandal, there has been plenty of controversy in the NFL, but none have stood out as much as Kaepernick's lately. Here's a list of players who have done far worse things in recent years than kneeling, but still continue to be above the "most disliked" ranking.
1. Bruce Miller, San Fransisco
Miller was accused of drunkenly going into the hotel room of an elderly couple and beating a 70-year-old man with his cane. He also reportedly assaulted the man's son. His team released him on the same day.
2. Cameron Artis-Payne, Carolina
We're all a little guilty of being heavy-footed when we're running late to work, but chances are we've never reached 102 mph at 1:30 a.m. Well, that's exactly what Artis-Payne was doing when he was arrested for speeding and reckless driving.
3. Johnny Manziel, Cleveland
Manziel was indicted by a grand jury on accounts of assault and domestic violence. Manziel's then-girlfriend claimed she was restrained and then forced against her will into a car Manziel was driving. She attempted to get out and hide behind some bushes, but Manziel turned around and threw her back in the car by her hair. He would not give her access to her phone. Manziel hit her and smashed her head into the car window. In a police affidavit, she writes, "I was crying, and begged the valet, 'Please don't let him take me. I'm scared for my life!'" Manziel's ex-girlfriend has a restraining order against him and he has since been dropped by Cleveland, Nike, and two agents.
4. Andrew Quarless, Green Bay
Quarless decided to have a little fun in Miami Beach one night when he fired a gun in public. The incident apparently stemmed from an argument between two males and a group of women. He was arrested at 5:35 a.m, attempting to hide the gun in a potted plant after fleeing the scene in a black Porche.
5. Brandon Ivory, Houston
Apparently, Ivory felt shorted by the paycheck he was receiving from the NFL, which must be what prompted him to reportedly burglarize a residence by kicking down the door and stealing cash and iPads.
6. Prince Shembo, Atlanta
Shembo admitted to killing his girlfriend's dog, Dior. The Yorkie suffered extensive injuries including, "a fractured rib, abdominal hemorrhage, head trauma, eye injuries, and extensive bruising in the muscles of his front leg and shoulders." In case you were wondering, they are no longer together.
7. Ray McDonald, Chicago
If you are trying to live out your dream of marrying an NFL player, I would suggest staying away from McDonald. McDonald reportedly kicked down a locked bedroom door and physically assaulted his ex-fiancée, while she was holding their baby. This only adds to McDonald's growing list of allegations. He also attacked his then-pregnant fiancée, "choking her and kneeing her in the stomach" months earlier. He is also accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a party. Not exactly what you would call "father of the year."
9. Letroy Guion, Green Bay
Guion was pulled over on a traffic related incident, but when the police searched his car, they found 357 grams of marijuana, a gun and $190,000 in cash. When his father arrived at the police station, he was questioned about his son's arrest. To which he reportedly said, "Well, I'll be honest, every time he comes down he always brings the best weed you ever smoked in your life." At least his pops is proud of him.
8. D'Qwell Jackson, Indianapolis
There's nothing more frustrating than finding the perfect parking spot and then having someone slide in and take it away from you. Jackson agrees. He was so fed up with not getting the parking space that he got out of the car and punched the pizza delivery man who took the space away from him, even though the pizza man told him he would only be there for a moment.
10. Terrence Cody, Baltimore
Cody illegally imported an alligator into Maryland. Yes, an alligator. Why he did so is a mystery to us all, but he apparently didn't care for it properly, along with his dog which he "inflicted unnecessary pain or suffering," "tortured," and "intentionally cruelly killed." Maybe he should've started his pet care with a goldfish.
11. Josh McNary, Indianapolis
McNary was accused of raping a woman, who apparently told him "no" and that she needed to go home, after spending time at his apartment after meeting McNary at a bar. McNary testified that the sex was consensual and the jury ruled not guilty.
12. John Boyett, Denver
Boyett is like that one guy you know who, after years of drinking, still can't handle his alcohol. One night, Boyett went out to a sports bar where he took some shots and then threatened the bartender and patrons. He then left the bar and got into a taxi, where he assaulted the cab driver by punching him in the ear. He got out and fled on foot. He didn't make it too far before he decided to steal a shovel from a construction site and go back to hit the taxi driver. Police had already been called, however, and he ran away and tried to hide from the cops by burying himself in a pile of mulch. You can't make this stuff up.
Did I mention this all happened within the last two years?
If you would like to view all 829 current NFL player arrests since 2003, USA Today has compiled a comprehensive list for you.
So while NFL players continue to commit crimes from speeding to assault to rape to murder, let's all make sure we brush those off, but keep a vigilant watch for anyone who dares to kneel.
