Celebrities' Power To Make A Difference

The Power Of Having A Voice

We all know at least one Lady Gaga song, whether it be one of her ballads or party anthems. Taking a new approach to how Gaga uses the power she has as a famous artist, she has released a new song about rape on college campuses.

Music has always been a vessel for passion that people can relate to when they listen, but with this song there will hopefully be more of a shift towards making more music that has the potential to help/save lives and start conversations.

The music video depicts three different situations of rape that could, and allegedly have, happened on college campuses around the country. Rape on college campuses has been put under the radar. Yes, it is talked about, but the culture of victim-blaming and the fact that almost nothing is being done to address its prominence across campuses are the reasons this song is so important.

Not only is this song used in “The Hunting Ground,” a touching documentary about this problem on college campuses, but Gaga's music video is giving some of its funds to organizations that are trying to help sexual assault survivors. The music video is hard to watch, but that’s the whole point. It’s about surfacing issues in our country that people don’t want to talk about, and that’s where music can make a difference.

Yes, there are songs that have been used to help causes before, but there is something different about this one. The song is not just yelling in your face that it’s about rape. It’s not one of those songs that is written poorly with too much substance about caring about a certain topic; this song makes you think.

The song is called “Til It Happens To You.” Until what happens to you? This beautiful song is not only pleasant to listen to, but has an underlying message that, you'll understand as you hear it.

Lady Gaga’s voice is making a difference. She is straying from the easy topics of boys, booze, and partying that so many musicians make their money off of and is actually making a difference. Now, if every musical artist wrote one song like this about an issue that needed to be brought to the surface, there would be more awareness about the things our country needs to focus on and continue to improve.

The power of having a voice that people listen to is a blessing that should be used to give back in some way or another.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
