How YouTube Has Shaped My Generation
2005 changed our lives forever.
Youtube a video streaming service that gives you access to videos created by content creators. I'm sure if you think about it you may be listing some of your favorite creators. Shane Dawson, Glam and Gore, BuzzFeed, and many many more. In addition to having 100,000's creators, the videos that the creators make cover a mass genre.
Education
Youtube has become a one-stop shop for learning. Whether you are in college like myself or high school, you have defiantly found yourself watching youtube videos for school. Education is one of the genera's you can find on Youtube. It consists of educational videos for school coving every subject you can possibly think of.
Now education doesn't stop there. You can also learn how to build and fix things that are broken. Not to mention that Youtube is extremely helpful for troubleshooting electronics and computer software.
Since 2005 beauty gurus have been helping to teach young girls all over the world to feel good about themselves and to express themselves through makeup. Many of these creators also make fashion videos or look books. Several beauty gurus have been able to branch out from youtube and do collaborations with makeup brands or start their own lines of makeup or clothing.
Entertainment
Some videos that are education can also be viewed as entertainment to some. BBC, INSIDER, Noisey, are some examples. They make content that allows viewers to get a more worldly view of the world from the comfort of their own home.
Many students like to use Youtube as a form of entertainment such as skits, comedy, and vlogs. In order to keep up with content, many users decide to subscribe to their favorite creators so they never miss out on a new video.
You can even work on your fitness while on Youtube. Channels such as Blogilates design workout routines, and even help you set up a monthly routine with the videos they have. There are also many other channels that focus on weight lifting, and Zumba.
Music is also widely available on Youtube. Whether you are looking for your favorite music video from the 2000s or you are listing to an up in coming artist. YouTube has provided musicians with a public space to not only perform but to be discovered.
The Dark Side
There has been much controversy with many Youtube creators since its birth in 2005. One of the most recent was Tanacon and Vidcon. Tanacon was created as a virtual middle finger to Youtube and the yearly event they host called Vidcon. It was hosted in the same town on the same weekend as Vidcon.
Tanacon was overhyped, leading to over sales in tickets and a venue that was too small for a mass crowd that showed up. Many showed up only to stand outside for hours with no food or water. Afterwards, there was a documentary that was created by Shane Dawson to find out the truth of what really happened at Tanacon. It came down to lack of planning.
Although fans are starting to be reimbursed for their tickets, their may be a pending lawsuit. It is very important to remember that just because someone seems good on Youtube does not make then a universally good person.
Although for many users Youtube is a harmless environment to learn and be entertained. Youtube just came under fire for allowing suggestive videos of children to be monetized. Meaning creators are able to post their content and an advertisement is attached to it. You might have to watch a short ad before watching the video you selected. By these videos even being published children are being exploited and their exploiters are getting paid for it.
Top 8 YouTube Scandals of 2018
From Tana Mongeau to Logan Paul here are the top scandals on YouTube of 2018. *spills tea*
The year is coming to a close and if you are just as obsessed with YouTube as I am, you will remember these scandals. Hopefully, 2019 is a better year for the YouTube community.
8. Emma Chamberlain Clothing Line Scam
Although not too many people were mad about Emma having her own clothing line, the scandal arrived when she would not advertise the correct clothing she was selling to her fans. When Emma announced her clothing line on YouTube and Instagram back in late July of 2018, she would not disclose the exact products she was selling, which made people very angry considering the high prices of her products. Instead, Emma posted pictures of the blurred out products so people were unclear of what they were buying. After, people began speculating whether or not this was fair considering the expense of her products. Even though the clothing line was controversial at first, people realized the products were high quality and the so-called "scandal" blew over in no time.
7. Shane Dawson "Pedophile" Scandal
Early in January of this year, the Youtuber was accused of pedophilia due to some the jokes he told on his podcast. Although none of the allegations were true, the podcast clips were taken out of context and posted on Twitter and videos on YouTube soon surfaced. Shane quickly apologized for his humor on his podcast considering he made those jokes years ago and has changed since then and shot down the allegations. The "scandal" was terminated pretty quickly and most people believed the scandal was formed in order to cover up other controversies in the YouTube community at the time.
6. Bobby Burns Using Shane Dawson for Fame
Recently Shane Dawson has been changing his content into "documentary-type" videos. In one of his documentary series, he decided to confront a hater. Bobby Burns was a commentary content creator and was brought on to Shane's series. The duo immediately became friends and Shane decided to feature him in his videos and gave him a series on his channel. After only a few productions of the weekly series, Bobby Burns was canceled from Shane's channel. Bobby has been making music and broke up with his girlfriend, Jordanne Leigh since the series ended. Although many people believe Bobby's intentions were harmless, he has been very hypocritical of Shane in the past and has made videos on many of the actions in which he criticized creators for doing.
5. Tide Pod Challenge
Back in January, Glozell came out with a new tide pod challenge which sparked a revolution. After this video, many teens began to also upload videos trying the trend. The trend led Tide to even add to their products "do not consume" and they sent out multiple statements on social media in which they addressed the safety issues of consuming tide pods. even though the rate at which teens were actually trying the trend was low, there was a significant amount of backlash regarding the challenge.
4. Laura Lee Racism Scandal
This year, old racist tweets resurfaced from Laura Lee's account. She decided to make a YouTube video addressing these racist remarks. However, in her video, she was not sincere at all which made the apology even worse. She has now been made int a meme and her work in the beauty community has been severely impacted.
3. Jake Paul an Erika Costell
Jake Paul and Erika Costell have been dating for a while now. However, they recently announced their breakup after "The Mind of Jake Paul" series by Shane Dawson. People believe this is just a publicity stunt due to how affectionate and genuine they were with each other during the series. Although recent allegations of Jake cheating has been released. Apparently, he was Direct Messaging a model from the U.K. with the intentions of flying her out and interviewing her for Team10. Although not much has been said after this, the messages are pretty suspicious.
2. TanaCon
Tana Mongeau decided to create a new convention in rebellion against Vidcon. Due to the publicity of free tickets with the amount of highly esteemed creators the convention was destined to be a failure. The convention did not have enough security, space, or food for people to have an enjoyable time and was one of the biggest scandals Tana has been a part of. More about this series and what went wrong can be seen on Shane Dawson's channel.
1. Logan Paul and the Suicide Forest
The year started off with this scandal and nothing has topped it. Logan Paul traveled to Japan in January and filmed in the suicide forest. In hopes of getting content for his vlog, he stumbled upon a dead body. Instead of terminating the filming, he actually did a close up of the body. He then explained how he wanted to prevent suicides and be an advocate for mental illness. Obviously not taking into consideration his viewer demographic is mainly children, he could not have posted a worse video. Logan received an immense amount of hate and backlash for this video and took a "break" from social media. The break lasted about a month and so far I do not think he has learned much from this stunt.
