Krishi Vigyan Kendra is the latest Science-based institution in which various types of training are provided which help farmers to become self-reliant. It also provides knowledge and technical knowledge to the farmers with self-employment. From 1962-1972, the Ministry of Education, Planning Commission and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, considered the establishment of a Krishi Vigyan Kendra for the spread of agriculture. In August 1973, a committee was formed; whose president was Dr. Mohan Singh Mehta. Under his chairmanship, it was decided to establish Krishi Vigyan Kendra for socio-economic upliftment of the farmers. The committee presented its report in 1974. The first Krishi Vigyan Kendra was established in 1974 in Puducherry under the administrative control of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore on a pilot basis
Concepts of Krishi Vigyan Kendra:
Krishi Vigyan Kendra will provide education through "work experience" and thus will be related to technical education, which is not mandatory to be literate to achieve.
The center will train only the expansion personnel who are employed, and the practitioners, farmers, and fishermen. In other words, the needs of those employed and self-employed will satisfy them. There will be no equal course for Krishi Vigyan Kendra. Courses and programs will be based on requirement and according to the availability of natural resources.
Under the fifth five year plan, 18 agricultural science centers were established. 44 and Krishi Vigyan Kendra were established in 1984. On 1 April 1992, in a meeting under the 8th Five Year Plan, 'National Demonstration' (in 48 districts), 'Operational Research Program', (152 centers) and 'Lab to Lad' were included in the Agriculture Science Center.
In August 2005, at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra National Convention, the Prime Minister had established every Krishi Vigyan Kendra in every rural district till 2007. At present, there are a total of 642 Krishi Vigyan Kendras in the country which is working for the development of the farmers.
Mandates
The adoption of technology products through evaluation, refinement, and formulation is the mandate of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra. The following activities are carried out by each agricultural science to achieve this mandate effectively and for the up gradation and development of the farmers.
To identify the local specificity of agricultural technologies, the field is tested on various farming systems.
Aggressive performance is done on farmers' fields for certification of production capacity.
The farmers and the spread workers are trained to update their knowledge and skills in modern agricultural technology.
Works in the form of a knowledge center of New Agricultural Technology with the support of public, private and voluntary sector initiatives for improving the agriculture economy of the district.
Provide technology products such as seeds, plantation material, biological components, newborn and young livestock etc. to the farmers and also produce them.
Organizes spread activities to create awareness for rapid distribution of advanced agricultural technology and adoption of technology in agriculture and allied sectors.
Purpose of Krishi Vigyan Kendra

Demonstrations before the workers of government departments such as Agriculture / Horticulture / Fisheries / Animal Science and NGOs with the farmers in view of reducing the time gap between development and adoption of latest agricultural technology and its adoption.
