Demi Lovato is a singer, songwriter, actress, and model; she’s also more than that though. She is a hero to those who struggle with self-image. She’s written many songs that support those who fight the battle, who have won, and for survivors like herself.
There is just one song that doesn’t get enough recognition: "Believe In Me."
The song came out in 2008, and was a part of her Don’t Forget album. It’s an older song but the saying is “oldies but goodies”. While reading this, I’d highly recommend pulling up another tab, going onto YouTube, and typing in “Demi Lovato Believe in Me”. Let’s be honest, half of you probably have YouTube up already. Just really listen to her lyrics.
I'm losing myself, trying to compete
With everyone else
Instead of just being me
Don't know where to turn
I've been stuck in this routine
I need to change my ways instead of always being weak
This is just the opening chorus and it starts out strong, peer pressure. At some point in life, everyone is easily impressionable. You want to be like the rest of the crowd to fit in because it’s just easier. When in truth and reality, it’s just the weaker way out. Being yourself in life is how we grow up to be strong, unique people.
I don't want to be afraid I want to wake up feeling beautiful today
And know that I'm okay cause everyone's perfect in unusual ways
So see I just want to believe in me
Here is the song’s chorus, it’s just beautiful. It gives off a powerful message that it only takes one person to make us feel beautiful and that is ourselves. That’s the only person we truly need to believe in us. Because if we can’t believe in ourselves, and see how beautiful we really are, how can we expect/hope anyone else too?
The mirror can lie doesn't show you what's inside
And it can tell you your full of life it's amazing what you can hide
Just by putting on a smile
Looking in the mirror, yes it will show if you have frizzy hair, zits, freckles, tan or pale skin, whatever you think makes you unattractive. Demi’s singing here about what’s underneath, things the mirror can never show you but you can show through your smile.
I guess I always knew that I had all the strength to make it through
I cannot be afraid I want to wake feeling beautiful today
And know that I'm okay cause everyone's perfect in unusual ways
You see, now, now I believe in me
The only person who knew you had it in you all along, will be yourself and you cannot be afraid of anything. Wake up every day, confident (another Demi song reference), feel beautiful in your own skin, and just remember that it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks about you. All that matters is what you think about yourself.
"Believe In Me" has become Demi’s most overlooked song, now all it’s used for is vocal warm-ups before a concert. This song needs to be performed live for all her fans to hear so they can remember to believe in themselves again. I will forever believe in myself thanks to Demi Lovato and this song.
