There is nothing that helps a college student stay motivated for a new semester like an inspiring new album. If there is one thing that my friends know about me, it's that I have become a "new music evangelist." Perhaps that is why I felt the NEED to write about the powerful new album that came out by Sia titled "This is Acting." Here is why you HAVE to give it a listen:
1. I can't stop dancing.
So many college students are plagued by morning classes that they need to take for graduation. However, it's not the classes that are the issue, it's the waking up early of course. Have an 8:00 a.m. class? No fear, Sia's song "Move Your Body" should do the trick. This morning, in fact, I had only gotten a few hours of sleep and was literally still dreaming when my alarm went off. With the last of my energy, I was able to turn on my speaker and play the dance-anthem. I suddenly had the energy to bounce around my room and get ready in record time. With lyrics like "Your body's poetry, move your body for me" who wouldn't want to dance at 7 a.m. Perhaps my good friend who lives below me might say otherwise.
2. Real lyricism
One thing really respectable about Sia is that she actually writes all of her own music, as well as music for other people. Her talents as a writer are blatantly obvious as she literally spits out poetry in most of her tracks. Have you ever loved someone so much that you felt like a house engulfed by flames of passion that literally needed to consume this person in like oxygen to continue living? Well, that's what Sia sings about in her song "House on Fire." It is a story of love, pain, and sweet desperation. All that combined with a powerful upbeat pop-rhythm, the track is literally an Adele song on steroids.
3. Broke college student anthem
On her song "Cheap Thrills," Sia repeats, "I don't need no money as long as I can feel the beat and "I don't need dollar bills to have fun tonight." I don't know about you but there have been quite a few nights here in college where I have not been able to afford to go out. Some nights might just end up being about Netflix and hanging with friends. In Sia's case, dancing around to good music is just as fun as anything, and free.
4. So empowering
One thing that so many college students face is the feeling like the world is on our shoulders. We always have to worry about exams, jobs, personal drama and so much that can get us down. Sia literally puts listeners back in control of their lives with the song "Unstoppable" with lyrics like, "I'm unstoppable I'm a Porsche with no brakes I'm invincible. Yeah, I win every single game. I'm so powerful don't need batteries to play I'm so confident, yeah, I'm unstoppable today." This track is not only just another dance anthem, but can literally change feelings of failure into feelings of pure invincibility. It is a great song to play right before that exam you're so nervous about.
5. Sia is savage.
If you got to this part of the article and are still not convinced that "This is Acting" is worth your time, you need to know the whole principle of the album. Sia's new album is mostly a compilation of song rejects. A majority of songs on that album were offered to other artists and then turned down. Whether you're Sia or anyone, nobody likes rejection. However, instead of throwing these unwanted songs away, Sia decided that they were still hits, even if the other artists couldn't see it. After listening to "This is Acting" a million times, I totally agree. Just give it a listen and maybe you will too.
