If you’ve never seen Adrienne Shelly’s movie Waitress, starring Keri Russel, add it to the top of your movie list. It is a film inspired by the birth of Shelly’s daughter, Sophie, and tells the story of a woman named Jenna who bakes her secrets into pies and is pregnant with her very own baby. Her pregnancy spurs her to try and escape her terrible husband, and her gynecologist is the only person who knows just how desperate her situation is. Sounds interesting? Well, here are five reasons you should listen to the official Broadway cast album:
1. Sara Bareilles wrote it.
Everyone has heard of Sara Bareilles, whether you recognize her name or not. Think back to late 2007 – around the same time Waitress the movie premiered – when “Love Song” was on nearly every radio station. “Gravity” was the go-to slow song. Remember? Sara Bareilles brings her same self-proclaimed piano based pop soul style to Shelly’s story, making for music that is not only fun to listen to, but also easy to dance to (trust me, I’ve done it).
2. Sara Bareilles recorded “What’s Inside: Songs from Waitress” prior to the cast album.
In case you’re wary of an actual cast album because you’re not a big fan of musicals, worry not! Prior to Waitress’ Broadway debut, Bareilles released an album of songs from the musical sung by her, with a few songs featuring Jason Mraz. If you aren’t into following plot and just want some relaxing music to listen to, “What’s Inside: Songs from Waitress” has you covered.
3. The story is empowering.
Spoiler alert: Not only does Jenna take control of her own life through the course of Waitress, two other waitresses at the diner, Dawn and Becky, also take control of their lives. The three start off in situations that are less than ideal, but manage to steer themselves back onto a better, happier path. Not only that, but they all stand by their decisions – Becky in particular in the song “I Didn’t Plan It” – no matter what.
4. Old Joe.
You won’t get this just from listening to the album, so allow me to explain: Old Joe is the owner of the pie diner where the majority of Waitress takes place. He is an irritable man who always finds something to complain about and has a very detailed order that includes specific instructions on how he takes his beverages. The only waitress who is any good at dealing with him is Jenna. He is instrumental in Jenna’s future, and he sings one of my favorite songs on the album, “Take It from an Old Man.” It brings literal tears to my eyes.
5. Jenna’s character growth and “She Used To Be Mine.”
Jenna, our main character, undergoes a strong emotional journey throughout Waitress. Her important solo song, “She Used To Be Mine,” illustrates who Jenna used to be and where she finds herself during perhaps the lowest part of her story. The song is beautiful and moving, and both Sara Bareilles in “What’s Inside: Songs from Waitress” and Jessie Mueller, the show’s star, in the official cast album, pour a magnificent amount of emotion into the piece.
This Tony-nominated musical is love, strength and change, to quote the musical, “mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie.” If you’re looking for new music, it is well worth your time to give it a listen. It is available to stream on Apple Music and Spotify, available digitally on iTunes and Amazon, and the physical CD will be released on July 1.
