Feminists Don't Care About Santa's Gender
I'm so tired of writing articles that have to defend the beliefs of a movement that we should all support.
So let me say this for the people who are still having a hard time grasping what feminism is: It has NOTHING to do with the fact that Santa Claus is a man and that snowmen are men. Women don't care about their genders — we just want respect. And this latest outburst is yet another media strategy to diminish and destroy a movement all about equality.
That idea did not come from women. That came from the people who make fun of equality, the same people who believe we shouldn't speak unless spoken to and that we shouldn't earn a living or control our own finances.
We are not trying to rewrite Christmas stories or change every single movie character into a picture of ourselves. The feminist movement never has and never will care about that in the slightest.
Once again, I'm going to write down what feminism is all about, since so many seem to still have difficulties in understanding that.
Feminism is the inherent belief that women should have the same rights as men; financial, social, political and cultural.
Feminism is the understanding that my having two X chromosomes instead of one X and one Y doesn't mean that I am the weaker sex.
Feminism is the acknowledgment that I shouldn't be earning a few cents less for every dollar that a man works because I am capable of working just as hard and therefore should have the same privileges.
Feminism is the decision to support other women and other men against toxic and prescribed gender roles. Because when one human being wins, so do we all.
Feminism is the basic want to be able to live without each aspect of our bodies being sexualized.
It is not about man-hating, it is not about the need for dominance. It is about what I've always said: the refusal to accept that we are less than and the fight for equality and the most basic human rights. What could be so funny about that? Absolutely nothing.
Next time there is an article that emerges about outraged "feminazis" that burn bras and have ovaries tattooed on their foreheads who are now attacking the Easter bunny or some other mythological creature that has absolutely no relevance for 364 days out of the year, don't take a second to believe it.
Every time you do, and every time we continue to have this exact same conversation, we are taking away from what truly matters. Which is exactly what the patriarchal media wants. We spend our time being distracted by the continued arguments over the basics instead of making true progress. And whether you actively realize it or not, every time feminism takes a step forward, so does everyone else.
