I began going to Zumba classes in high school and have enjoyed getting to dance and sweat and work out. So, last year, I became a licensed Zumba instructor. Now that I'm on the other side of the class, I can give you some insight into what I always wondered about: what does your Zumba teacher actually think about during class?
1. "Yes! My regulars are here!"
2. "I definitely should have had a healthier lunch."
3. "Is this dance always this long?"
4. "Smile! Everyone is watching you!"
5. "Ok, here we go, a slower song. Thank goodness."
6. "I can't believe I messed up this section again!"
7. "I'm so glad she came back to class!"
8. "I need to say something, but I am so out of breath."
9. "SMILE!"
10. "It's about to be the awkward silence when the song ends. I have to find something other than 'Good Job!' to say."
11. "Why did I put so many hard songs in today's playlist?"
12. "Shoot, I haven't been smiling this whole class."
13. "If I look like I'm having fun, maybe they'll have fun."
14. "SOS There is sweat dripping into my eye."
15. "Is this almost over?"
Believe it or not, I don't actually watch for who is a few counts off or if you get the tricky feet. If I do look for that, it's because I want to make sure the dances that I choreograph are fun and that my class can catch on and do them with me. Most classes, I end up watching myself. I have enjoyed teaching Zumba and getting to know the people in my classes. One thing my friends always say when they come to my class is, "Please don't watch me. You'll think I'm so bad!" Well, now you know what I'm really thinking about when I teach a class.
