Recently, South Korean artist Zoa Seo has been making waves in the R&B/Pop music scene. Her latest EP Zoa incorporates many different themes and elements of both of these genres, while she also dazzles listeners by throwing in elements of K-Pop. Slower tracks on the EP like "Bad Dreams," and "In Deep" show a calmer side to Seo, while other songs like "All the Way," "Been Meaning to Say," and "Call My Name" show a more groovy and uplifting side.
In a recent interview with Seo, she stated "All of these songs are based on my true stories. I had so many stories that made me feel happy or sad, and I started writing them down and creating them." She added, "I am 22 and my stage-name comes from 'Seo' being my last name, and 'Zoa' meaning 'I like it' in Korean. So, I thought it sounded really nice and stuck with it."
Seo goes on to say that, "I started making music in 2019. I was never into writing music before and I thought I'd never be able to make music. Eventually I had to write music for a school recital and that's when I realized that making music was really fun!" She adds, "I used to live in South Korea, but I moved to Los Angeles because of school. In Korea we only listen to one trending artist or genre, like BTS. I wanted to go somewhere that every genre of music can be welcomed. Since I started writing music I have been more emotionally conscious about what's happening in my life."
Zoa Seo has been inspired by artists like Ariana Grande, D'Angelo, and Jessie James in order to create her unique blend of music "They're my favorite type of music" she says. "Brown Sugar by D'Angelo is also my desert island album because it was the first album that got me into R&B." Themes from these artists can definitely be heard on this EP, and Seo said that her favorite track on this EP was "'In Deep' because I wrote it with one of my best friends, who I share all my emotions with. I'm really self-conscious about myself and I want to mold myself into who I want to be. I think this song shows that really well."
Inspiration for the artwork on this EP came from Seo's love for the color purple. "I love purple, so I wanted purple to be in my artwork in some way. I found a photographer online named Courtney and we used purple smoke bombs to make it look very dreamy."
Although Zoa Seo doesn't have big news for 2020, she is playing a few gigs around LA in the meantime, and growing her audience. "My favorite song to play live is 'All the Way' because it's very lively and fun." She states, "I think I'll put out a single in October but I'm not sure. For now I'm just trying to do more gigs and put myself out there."
Overall this EP was very fun to listen to, and Zoa Seo seems like a really down to Earth and talented person. I look forward to hearing what new music she makes next, and I definitely recommend downloading this EP via Apple Music or Spotify.
