What's with YouTube? I can't be the only one who goes there to listen to some music, but 50 videos later end up watching some random guy recreating the 300th scale version of the Eiffel Tower out of LEGOs? Right? There is just something about it that pulls me in, and as much as I don't like it, I still allow it to happen. The random videos are just so enticing.
But I've found a fix for falling into the random video rabbit hole of YouTube. That fix is by binging a whole channel versus just random videos.
Great solution, huh?
OK, fine... maybe it's not a great solution, but it's still entertaining. And honestly, I've found it kind of neat to watch a whole channel as there tends to be inside jokes or reoccurring themes that are present throughout which makes the experience something different.
Below are some of my favorite YouTube channels that I find binge-worthy. Some (a lot) are just plain dumb, but there are one or two actual interesting channels in my list too:
1. Binging With Babish.
Binging With Babish is a cooking show hosted by Andrew Rea. What sets this apart from the many other cooking channels on YouTube is that he focuses on recreating dishes from movies or TV shows. Don't watch while you're hungry.
2. Casually Explained.
A channel dedicated to (as the name states) casually explaining things to you, that really don't need explaining. The way it does this is with cartoons illustrated in ms paint, colorful comic sans font, and overused jokes that still tend to be funny.
3. ElectroBOOM.
ElectroBOOM is a comedic, educational channel hosted by Mehdi Sadaghda. Mehdi mainly focuses on electronics and does so in extreme detail. I've learned more from watching his videos then I did while learning about the same subjects in school.
4. h3h3Productions.
Be warned, if you do choose to binge some of these, h3h3Productions is definitely one of the more lengthy channels. It's hosted by husband and wife YouTubers, Ethan and Hila Klein. They don't really have a specific genre but they do put out some great content. Whether it be reaction videos, sketch comedy, interviews or even podcasts. Take note though, they aren't afraid to say things how they see fit which tends to upset some people.
5. iDubbbzTV.
iDubbzTV is hosted by a fellow named Ian. His channel shares a lot with h3h3Productions in the sense of it has a lot of videos, not one specific genre, and is full of touchy topics. I don't know how to emphasize it enough, Ian has no filter. His content is still good, but I could for sure see how someone could be upset by what he says.
6. Primitive Technology.
I think it's fitting that the cover photo for Primitive Technology is simply a rock face. This channel is hosted by John Plant, although I don't know if "hosted" is the right word — stars might be a more fitting word. That's because John never talks in any of his videos. They're just him, doing and making stuff like how they would have been done years ago. The videos are almost all near 10 minutes, but they are just memorizing to watch.
Tip, make sure you turn closed caption on.
7. William Osman.
William Osman is an inventor and creator. His background is in mechanical/electrical engineering, which he uses in the most entertaining ways. What I love about him is his genuinely good attitude and kind spirit that is always present on the screen. Even after he lost his whole house (where he shot the videos) to a wildfire last year.
8. Simone Giertz.
Simone Giertz is another inventor/maker like William Osman, but she focuses on robots, automation, and how shitty she can make them. Really though, that's what she calls them, shitty robots. But let's be honest, they're not shitty at all — they're amazingly entertaining.
9. Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell.
Kurzgesagt doesn't upload too often, but when they do you need to stop and watch the video. Think of Casually Explained but actually educational and VERY well produced. The Gates Foundation has funded some of their videos, that should speak volumes about their quality.
10. You Suck At Cooking.
These videos are all entertainment. Although another cooking channel, it isn't one like Binging With Babish where they would want to follow along at home. What he does while cooking and how things are described are all for entertainment purposes. While dumb, they're still a good watch.
11. Doug DeMuro.
Doug reviews cars and trucks of all kinds. His videos are indeed informative. Albeit a bit lengthy, they're still a good watch. I was a bit turned off at his pretentious nature at first, but I think Stockholm Syndrome has gotten to me and I don't really feel that anymore with him... at least not at all times.
