Are you a millennial? Do you prefer avocado toast over owning a house? Do you spend your free time shutting down businesses and taking selfies for "the Instagram"? Are you constantly belittled by the older generation until they need help with their internet at which point you become the most intelligent and helpful person they know?
What if I told you that you were wrong about one of those things?
What if I told you it was the first?
Many people continue to think of, and talk about, millennials as teenagers, maybe stretching into their 20s. But they'd be wrong.
Most places define millennials as people born in 1981-1995, with the latest reports putting the barrier at 1997. That means if you're younger than 21 while reading this, you're not a millennial! You're a member of Gen Z.
Other terms for Gen Z include "iGeneration", "Gen Tech", "Gen Wii", "Net Gen", "Digital Natives" and "Plurals".
The concept of generations itself is kinda stupid, when you think about it, though.
Say, for the sake of argument, the cutoff for being considered a millennial is 1997. That means a child born on December 31st at 11:59 pm will be a millennial, and a child born one minute later will be a member of Gen Z.
There could be TWINS born in separate generations! They could have the same experiences growing up, be in the same grades at school, have the same friends and the same pastimes, and there would still be an entirely separate set of stereotypes for each of them.
I prefer the second option; ignoring generational discussions. There's no such thing as generations, really. Just a group of people who happen to be alive at the same time. There are no unifying or divisive experiences across age groups. 18-year-olds could have more interests in common with certain 30-year-olds than some of their peers.
And I don't know about you, but I, for one, have never been a fan of avocados.
