High School You and College You are very different people.

Looking upon the new year I began reflecting on my life. An old friend told me that "I am different" and it made me wonder. Is the fact that I am different bad? Does it mean that I am simply growing up, and thus changing? It came up in conversation that I graduated high school two years ago this June. I look at photos on my wall, in frames, and on social media. I see this person, that sometimes I do not recognize. The hair is partly at fault, but high school I realized, is a vortex. In the sense that, you are put in this indefinite hold for four to six years of your life. Occurrences that are unimportant, seem so life altering at the time. The people who you call friends, become your life those years. What happens when you grow up, and realize what you thought was definite, is actually infinite?

To anyone who doubts that college will change you, spend a year in college. Regardless if you dorm or commute, time in college will have an impact on you. I do believe you change due to the wealth of knowledge you are taught. Depending on your major, you will take an array of different topics. I never thought in a million years that I would not only be interested in but enjoy theology and philosophy. My government classes challenged me tremendously. The people you meet also help transition your growth. There is no pressure to keep friendships in college, the likelihood of having the same person in two classes is small. Those you choice to become friends with really must have made an impact on you.

Goals, they are right in your reach. In high school, your goal is to work towards getting into a college. In college, you are there, you have to work to stay there. But, you are working towards the goal of your career. This is the time where you will most likely work odd part-time jobs. You will apply and have internships in the field you will eventually work in. This is the time where you are finding yourself. To the comment "You're different", my response is Thank You. The notion that you have changed since high school is important. This is the time in our lives to experiment with who we want to become. Keep aiming for your growth, be the person where every new year you look back and can see your growth. Different is a good thing.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
