In an article published on The Black Sheep called "Please Read This Because I Am A White Girl," a writer bashes other writers, much like myself, who are a part of Odyssey. The author builds her entire article around the fallacy that the platform of Odyssey is composed solely of shallow and blond white girls. When my peers who are a part of Odyssey and I read this article, we felt personally victimized by our very own Regina George. We are a community of very strong, diverse writes that support and encourage each other.
Contrary to the generalizations made by the article, I don't fit the stereotype. I am biracial. I am not blond. I have not had everything handed to me on a golden platter. And I poop. I grew up to as one of three, all born in a two year span, so we were very close in age. To make sure that we were fortunate enough to have whatever we needed, my dad has worked at least two jobs for as long as I could remember, and my mom has always worked insanely hard to bring in as much money as she could in her commission based job. Although we are blessed beyond measure, we have never gotten anything easy.
I am not the type to care much about my looks all of the time. My wardrobe is made up mostly of oversized t-shirts and tennis shoes. Rarely do I wear much makeup or dresses. Most of the time, my hair is as messy as my life. Just because I am a part of a sorority doesn't mean that I have perfect blond hair or that I'm an oblivious ditz. I am content with how I look and who I am. Even if I did always put effort into my appearance or fit the stereotype, would it make me any less of a person? I am a student, a Delta Zeta, and a writer for Odyssey. They are part of my of my identity as a member of my university. They are molding me into the strong woman that I intend to be.
Odyssey is a very influential platform that reaches a myriad of readers. Our topics expand from trends to politics to TV shows. We write so that we can express ourselves in a way that our audience can relate to and identify with. We are a voice for our peers. We don't right for attention or praise, we write because we love it. And if my article on puppies isn't an important enough topic, then don't read it. If our political beliefs are different, you don't have to agree with me. I never asked for you to.
As a response, I have this to say. Each writer on this platform is extremely talented. And to the writer of the article, you don't have to like us. You don't have to read our articles. Bashing us doesn't make you a better writer. Bless your heart. To my fellow Odyssey writers, y'all are amazing. Keep breaking the internet and keep pooping!
