Coming to MTSU changed many things for me. The biggest change that I underwent was living away from my parents and family. To be honest I was pretty frightened. As time went on I realized the not so fun parts but more importantly the extraordinarily great parts of living on your own. I wanted to share with you what I found to be best and worst parts of living independently.
1. Freedom!
The greatest part of living on your own is the freedom that it holds. Parents are no longer able to control what you do or when you do it. It is your decision now. Your parent's opinion and advice will always matter and should always be something you hold onto, but now is the time to take some independence.
2. No food.
When I lived at home with my great ole family I knew that when I walked inside after a long day my mom would have a great meal made and there would always be my favorite waiting for me in the kitchen. Now, I'm broke and carry very few cooking skills.
3. Bonding with your roommate.
Even though you might be away from loved ones living on your own is a chance to make new close relationships that could last forever. For me, I moved in with my best friend and it has made us closer than ever.
4. Space.
If you are thinking about moving into a college dorm this could be one of the things you are most scared of but it is not as bad as you think. There might not be as much space as you would like but still enough to where you do not feel like you have no privacy at all. Many dorms have an okay amount of closet space and there are always places around your campus if you need time away from your annoying roommate.
5. Loneliness.
I love my privacy and me time but after a while, the terrible feeling of loneliness can set in. Having a roommate helps but you need more than one person in your life. Do not be afraid to get out of your comfort zone and talk to your neighbors. Joining clubs at activities around your community can also help to find new people. But remember, if you are ever homesick the ones that love you the most are never too far away.
6. New experiences and growth.
The transition into life on your own can also open your eyes to things you never thought would interest you. It is a time to figure out who you are and also mature into an independent, functioning adult. It is a very exciting time filled with chances to get out there and take a leap into the crazy, hectic world.
