So you're about to start college and you are at a loss for words. Your parents are freaking out, you're freaking out, and you and your roommate still can't agree on comforters. It's rough- I was there one year ago and let me tell you it does get easier... kind of. Here is the guide I wish I had the summer before I started college:
Cheap comforter--expensive sheets
At the end of the day your comforter really isn't going to matter, so spend your money on the comfort of your sheets because after your first college test you won't want to look at your comforter you're going to want to curl up in a ball in your sheets.
Recruitment
You're going to hear a lot of different things about this whether you are a girl or a guy. Honestly just go through it. You'll get some cool t-shirts, meet some awesome people, and you might even join a sorority or fraternity.
Sign up for everything
I can tell you this with confidence- you will not get every position you interview for and you won't interview for every interest meeting you go to, but college is about networking. People will tell you so many different things, but in the end it is about who you know and what you did. Make that resume pop even if the coolest thing on there is "donut eating club president," it'll start a conversation.
Talk to your RA
You are either going to love them or hate them, but if you are their friend they will do so many great things for you. It is their job to help you, so let them.
Call your parents
Look, it's a hassle sometimes, but there will be days when you are so lonely and it seems like the world is against you. Just call them.
Laundry
You will never realize how important clean clothes are until you are on week two of wearing the same pair of pants. You are going to run out of quarters eventually and if you swipe your card they charge you about $10, so if you ignore everything else in this article remember this- find someone with an apartment and wash your clothes there.
Read the syllabus
Here's the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth- you need to know which classes you can skip before you even go (sorry mom and dad). Ask anyone, there will come a day when you are on the verge of getting a better grade in a class and you will say to yourself "I need to skip this class so that I can pass this other one." Well if your syllabus says you only have 3 unexcused absences and you've already used 2 odds are you are going to get sick so you better save that one because you aren't going to go to the doctor. You better know that attendance policy better than you know anything else before it comes back to haunt you.
Go to class
Contradicting... I know, but nothing beats a quality education. Also let's go back to that networking thing, this is your time to talk to professors and see who is going to write you a killer recommendation letter. News flash: if you skipped class once a week count them out.
Go to everything
Look it's your freshman year, go on and go to all the football games and every free concert because eventually you won't be able to. Just soak it all it and live it up.
Get a job
It's week two of college and you're out of money... that money is never coming back- ever.
It is the best of times and the worst of times
Look your freshman year will be amazing. It doesn't matter if you lose friends or if you change your major twenty times- this year will be one of your best ones.
