10 Things That Only The Youngest Of The Family Knows To Be True

How many times have you been left somewhere?

Being the baby of the family is quite a role to take on. Everyone has the assumptions that we are mommy and daddy's favorite child and that we can get away with absolutely ANYTHING. But can we actually get away with that much, though? Here are 10 things that only the youngest of the family would understand.

1. You can't eat a meal without your siblings attacking your plate.

It is just an expected routine at this point that no matter what food I make, my siblings will come steal some of my food without asking. Whether it's taking the last chicken nugget on my plate, or grabbing my fork to take a big ole bite, I can guarantee that they will eat more of my food than I will.

2. Your rules are actually a lot stricter than those of your older siblings.

In contrary to what most people think, we really don't get away with much. Our older siblings have been there to test the limits, but when it comes to the baby, parents know all the tricks up the sleeve. We get earlier curfews than our siblings had and we are monitored very closely so we don't repeat the stress that our siblings have caused in the past.

3. You will always be the one to get picked on.

Our siblings really toughen up our skin by constantly tormenting us as we're growing up. If a joke is made, we are the center of it and if someone causes trouble, we are the first to be blamed. Let's not forget how many times our sister hides in doorways to scare us. And let's be real, I know I'm not the only one who has had their brother holding them by the ankles, dangling them over the toilet.

4. You basically have an extra closet.

When I'm weeks behind on laundry, or just really don't feel like wearing something of my own, I go right to my sister's closet and pick out whatever I want. Although this does happen so often, that we start to not recognize what clothes belong to which sister. And I can't even name how many times I've worn my own clothes for my sister to point me out in public screaming "Hey! That's my shirt!!", when it's usually, in fact, not.

5. You will always lose the fight on who gets to put the angel on top of the Christmas tree.

Every year I get told that I'm the one who put the angel on the tree last year. I'm pretty sure I've only ever really put the angel on top of the tree once (when both of my siblings graduated and I was the only kid left in the house), and quite honestly, none of us could ever reach it so my dad would have to do it anyway.

6. You'd get told you could play video games with your brother "after the next game", but would watch about 5 games before realizing he will never let you play.

.... Do you know how long I've waited to play Tony Hawk's Underground 2?

7. You will always have someone to reach out to for advice.

No matter what we're going through, it's a pretty good chance that our older siblings have gone through it too and they know just what to say to help us get through whatever it is. Whether it's relationship advice, school advice, fashion advice or even just them teaching you how to cook without setting the stove on fire, they're always ready to help and make life easier.

8. Our siblings' friends are our friends, too.

Having older siblings is like having a ton of friends without having to try to actually make any. Their closest friends pick on me just as much as they do and aren't afraid to treat me as if I'm their baby sister, too. In all honesty, their friends might haze me more than my own siblings do.

9. Your parents have completely forgotten you somewhere at least once...

... or for many of us, more than once. I can't name how many times my mom and sister have come to pick me up from dance, and left without even realizing that who they came to get wasn't in the car yet. Or that one time I was playing on the playground during my brother's baseball practice and it took me not responding to what I wanted from the drive-thru for them to realize I was still at the park.

10. Your siblings are your biggest defenders.

No matter how much they pick on us, steal our food or have to hold our hand through life, our siblings always have our back. If someone is being mean to me at school, my sister prepares herself to tell someone off and stand up for me. If a boy breaks my heart, my brother rounds up all his closest friends ready to kick his butt. They are our biggest supporters and are ready to take down anyone who stands in the way of my happiness.

All in all, I wouldn't trade being the baby of the family for the world.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
