You Do Not Have To Be Best Friends With Your Roommate

You are not going to become close to everyone you meet.

You Do Not Have To Be Best Friends With Your Roommate

Coming in freshman year and not knowing your roommate very well can be a little scary but also very exciting. I had this thought that my roommate and I would connect and become great friends and do everything together.

Little did I know that it was going to be the complete opposite.

In the beginning, it really bummed me out. Seeing all of these people that are super close to their roommate and I’m not. I thought something was wrong with me, but I eventually learned that we just don’t connect like everyone else.

Things are weird between us but we never see each other, and if we do all we say is “hi.” We don’t talk much and we barely see each other but I’m busy with my close friends and she is busy with hers.

I felt lonely in the beginning, but it made me branch out and meet new people. I ended up making my best friends who just live right down the hall. I don’t spend much time in room which makes it OK not being close with my roommate.

When I am in my room I am usually sleeping or getting ready, I’m not in there to hang out often. When I want to hang out with people I just go down the hall.

Not being close to my roommate I also have more me time. So, when I am in the room I get to have some time to myself which everyone needs.

I have learned I am not going to be close with everyone I cross paths with and one of those people just happens to be my roommate. At times, it can be a little weird when we are together but that’s OK.

Not being close to my roommate made me go make new friends who I know spend practically every second with. The friends who I have made take the place of the roommate that I always wanted.

The main thing I learned is that since I am not close with my roommate I need to make friends with other people in my dorm and preferably on my floor. Once I made my best friends who just live a few doors down I forgot that I’m not close with my own roommate. I go over to their room like it is my own.

Most people have this idea that they are going to be best friends with their roommate which I know that I had that idea but for me, it just isn’t the case.

Although my roommate didn’t become my best friend, I still made best friends who take the role of a roommate.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
