You Can't Let Anxiety Dictate Your Life

Nope, not today anxiety.

You Can't Let Anxiety Dictate Your Life
Isabel Alfaro

This past weekend I decided that I would do something that scared me, even though every step of the way my anxiety telling me something would go bad. I decided to go hiking Devil's Bridge in Sedona, Arizona. Now typically most people aren't afraid of hiking or things of that nature, but I am.

I have this semi-irrational fear that I will fall to my death, or will slip on a rock roll down the mountain and also die. Because of this I hardly hike, even though it used to be one of my favorite things to do, but ever since I was diagnosed with anxiety it has made it hard to do the things I used to love.

Every step of the way up I would think this could be it, I could fall here, I could die here, and while my friends understood that I was struggling I don't think they understood the extent of my fear.

When we started to actually hike up and gain elevation, my knees became weak and my legs felt like noodles and I began to feel my hands start to tremble, not because I was tired but because my anxiety was high that I was very close to having an anxiety attack.

I'm not going to lie, I was scared I was going to have an episode and be around random people and not be able to calm my self down, but every second, every step I took forward, it was a step that I was taking and not letting my anxiety rule me, and limit me.

I am terrified of heights but this past weekend I decided to do what scared me, and every time I thought I was going to die, I would look up and see the beautiful trees around, I would take deep breathes and inhale the crisp, cold air. This was surrounding me, had I not faced my fear, had I let anxiety keep me down at the beginning of the trail I would have never experienced the amazing outdoors of Sedona. I am so happy that I didn't let anxiety dictate what I can and can't do.

I think back to all the time I let anxiety kept me indoors and what I missed, what experiences I missed out on all because of an irrational fear, or anxiety. I hope that you challenge your self and push yourself to tell your anxiety, "Not today!".

Last Friday, I told anxiety, "Nope not today !"

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
