It's no secret that every college student spends more than what they think is reasonable for an education, and that it may not get them anywhere in life.
It's also no secret that everyone has a day where they just want to skip classes and stay at home — whether it's to catch up on sleep, study for that rough test tomorrow, catch up on other classes you're behind in, or do chores that desperately need to be done.
We all have to deal with that.
We also all have days where we're just a little... off in class. I've had my fair share of days where I'm barely managing to pay attention to what the professor is saying, let alone make coherent notes about said things I'm paying to learn about.
I'm not saying you have to stay home on those days.
If you plan on coming to class and actually trying to pay attention, then by all means come to class and try your best! All any of us can really do is try.
If you're not going to try, then don't bother showing up.
Don't waste anyone's time with that. It's selfish, rude and a nuisance to everyone else that's paying money to be there and care.
As one of my favorite professors put it: "In this room, right now, there is over $100,000 dollars worth of tuition sitting around to listen to what I have to say. Don't waste someone else's money."
Now, this was mostly in the context of non-mandatory attendance and distracting conversations during lecture, but I feel like this works for just about all issues I have with people going to class who don't actually want to be there.
Take, for example, how one of my classes recently had to be put on pause so my professor could wake a guy up who was asleep while we had guests in class. Maybe if he had been properly apologetic after being woken up I wouldn't be so aggravated by this, but he seemed annoyed to be there.
This class is not a mandatory attendance class, so the only reason he was there was... I don't know, bonus points that weren't given for the guest lecturers? To say he was there? To be disapproving the whole time and make it known by an over-exaggerated groan?
To be honest, I don't know why he was there.
If I was going to be that bored in a class, I wouldn't have shown up for it.
If I didn't know class was going to be boring when I showed up, I would've faked it and pretended to be interested.
It's only polite to your professor, your peers and especially the guests who have taken time out of their schedule to see your class.
So, please, the next time you try forcing yourself to go to class, ask yourself these questions: Am I going to fall asleep? Am I going to end up playing on my phone? Am I going to be so bored I can't focus? Will I just watch Netflix/YouTube/Hulu without paying any attention to class at all?
If it's a "yes" for any of these: don't go.
