The 2017 NBA Draft has come and gone and all the
attention from analysts, reporters, journalists, and fans were on what the
Boston Celtics are going to do with the third overall pick they acquired in a
trade with the Philadelphia 76ers: Could Boston keep the pick and select Kansas
guard Josh Jackson, Duke forward Jayson Tatum, or the player of their choosing,
or will Celtics GM Danny Ainge trade the pick, along with others, to the
Chicago Bulls in exchange for All-Star forward Jimmy Butler, or Indiana Pacers
star forward Paul George? The opportunities are there. Instead, the Celtics
kept the pick and selected Tatum, while Jackson was selected by the Phoenix
Suns. Butler was traded, but to the Minnesota Timberwolves, with the 16th
overall selection, in exchange for guards Zach Levine and Kris Dunn and the
number 7th overall pick.
But these discussions and trade rumors were put briefly on hold when it was
reported that the New York Knicks were talking with other teams about possibly
trading 2015 first-round pick Krystaps Porzingis. Knicks fans are not pleased
at all regarding these rumors, and have turned their anger and frustrations to
team president Phil Jackson. Jackson has
already been taking a lot of backlash and hate from Knicks fans and the
basketball media for his inability to recruit, sign, and draft big-name talent
to a franchise who has not won an NBA championship since 1973. Jackson’s
signings of Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah have not panned out well, as both
players missed significant amounts of playing time due to injuries. Phil has
also drafted unknown college and international players, such as Willy
Hernangomez, from Spain, and Ron Baker, from Wichita State. These two guys are
talented and can play the game of basketball, but they aren’t going to attract
big-name NBA free agents or famous celebrities to watch Knicks games at Madison
Square Garden. Phil also has hired coaches who have little to none experience running
his “triangle offense.” Since 2014, Jackson as hired two former L.A. Lakers (Derek
Fisher, who played under Jackson, winning multiple NBA championships, and Kurt
Rambis, who was part of the Lakers-Celtics NBA finals rivalries back in the
1980s). James Dolan, the owner of the Knicks, hasn’t stopped Phil from making
horrific personnel decisions. In fact, Dolan cares only about making money off ticket
sales and the TV contract with MSG. Dolan is also very much to blame for the
Knicks’ misery.
Knicks fans better hope real soon that Dolan somehow has a change of heart and has the “enough is enough” mentality by firing Phil Jackson and replacing him with someone who knows how to make wise NBA personnel transactions. This situation has gotten way out of hand, and it is only going to get worse until someone steps up and takes charge.
